Is punk still alive?

Does punk rock still exist? Or is it the same rehashed shit that started in the 70's? I mean I see bands that call themselves punk, but they're wearing the same exact clothes, haircuts, and they're playing the same exact shit as the first punk bands. Has the genre not evolved? I thought punk music was about bucking the system, but they haven't seemed to buck the very system they've established.

What do you think? Can you show me bands that have moved on?

Punk exists. Green Day is punk to an extent. When they performed "American Idiot" and "Holiday" at Live 8, if you saw that performance, it didn't matter how they were dressed or how overproduced their album was or how many "soccer moms" had bought it, the way they did it felt like a punk act. But they arent the best example. Some would say you can't be punk at all if you are that big and there's a point to that.

If you want real punk you will have to look underground. But a lot of the true punk is not what the "punks" are listening to, as that seems to just try to ape past bands.

I would suggest Mclusky and Refused. I think both of them broke up, but those are "the shape of punk to come." Bands like that tend to live more on the fringes of the indie-rock world now, than be loved by every teenager.

that refused cd is really good. 'new noise' is a fantastic track.

i'm not too familiar with mclusky, but 'to hell with good intentions' is one that i like.

Right there you ruined your argument. I like Green Day's new album, but they aren't punk, even they would admit that. They would argue it years ago(they hated the 'Gap punk' label that many in the scene would call them), but today they would admit it.

I agree and this is what I'm getting at...I see so many bands call themselves punk but they are doing the same exact thing as the Pistols or the Ramones. How is that punk when 25-30 years later you're doing the same exact thing.

Edge has a really good quote about punk music in the Guitar World article:

Guitar World: Even so, did you feel as if you were, to some degree, outsiders? The ethos of Seventies punk rock was so anti-rock star -- antibig.

The Edge: It wasn't so much anti-rock star as it was anti-shite music. Punk rock was a response to all the boring, pretentious bands. It was about getting back to essentials and remembering what rock and roll was all about...
