Introducing someone to Beck

One of my English professors, an American studies specialist and folk/bluegrass/eclectic anything fan, is interested in hearing more Beck. I burned him a copy of Sea Change last year, and he enjoyed it, and he also likes Johnny Cash's version of Rowboat. A few years ago, I probably would have done a single disc mix of stuff from One Foot in the Grave, Stereopathetic Soul Manure, Mutations, and Sea Change, with a scattering of songs from Odelay and Mellow Gold thrown in. But he's since been exposed to, and really enjoyed, the Clash, particularly Sandinista! and a lot of Tom Waits' more out-there stuff. So I'm going to go for it head-on and throw together a 2 CD mix following Beck's career more or less chronologically. He also has a really twisted sense of humor, so I'm leaning towards some of the stranger tracks on Stereopathetic Soulmanure to open up.

Disc 1

Satan Gave Me a Taco
Rowboat
One Foot in the Grave
Today Has Been a Fucked Up Day
Thunder Peel
No Money No Honey
He's a Mighty Good Leader

Whiskeyclone, Hotel City 1997
Soul Suckin' Jerk
Beercan
The New Pollution

Where It's At

Disc 2

Nobody's Fault But My Own

Clap Hands
Girl
Scarecrow
Hell Yes
E-Pro
Que Onda Guero
Farewell Ride

You'd do well to include some of his earlier (pre-album) stuff, too. Songs like "Heartland Feeling," "Let's Go Moon Some Cars," "Steve Threw Up," "Mexico," and even "Fume" are great tracks that (I think) this Prof. might dig on. I mean, if you're comfortable opening with Stereopathetic tracks, then nothing's too strange...

Fume was part of the original plan. I've already burned them. Unfortunately, I don't have the Loser EP and don't have Fume on CD. I tried ITunes, and they have it, but for some reason no tracks are showing up for download anywhere on there. I couldn't find it on soulseek, and all other d/l apps are blocked here. So it got bumped off. It's quite all right, though, I still like what I have.

Looks good to me.

I love how I spent my entire algebra lecture today listening to Sea Change rather than taking notes
