I like the film Ronin. Not saying it's awesome, not saying it should have won awards...I'm just letting my fellow Zoo Station movie people know that I enjoy it.

Have any of you seen M. Night's The Happening? WTF? I honestly don't know how to rate this film. If he meant to make a campy, tongue in cheek, genre film then I give it a 6 or 7/10. If he meant to make an earnest Thriller I give it a 2.5/10.

I gave it a 2/10

and I still think I am being unduly influenced by 'the sixth sense"
and liking a couple of the actors for work they have done in legit films.

thinking about this film in relationship to his other work

the only way it makes sense - is to conclude that when he spent some time in England he got some bad beef
and has contracted that brain wasting disease

Was it just coincidence that M. Night ICan'tSpellHisLastName only started going around saying "But it's just supposed to be a really fun B movie!" after the early reviews started coming out?

I haven't seen the film yet, but did hear that Shamalamadingdong intended it to be like a '70s B-movie. I'm guessing he's missed the mark on the whole that whole thing. It's gotta have some legitimately cool stuff and fine layer of camp and fun, like Soylent Green, The Omega Man, or Westworld. Even Indy IV, as flawed as it is, felt like a B movie.

Watched The Untouchables tonight. Costner's horribly miscast and Connery, Garcia, and even the dude from Starman are friggin' awesome - De Niro's alright, really only shines in the baseball bat scene. Is it just me, or does anyone else feel like Morricone's score sounded completely out of place? I don't expect to hear a sax in a climactic chase scene on a roof.

And Planet Terror just kicks too much ass to mention. That may be the only time I've liked Rose McGowan on screen when she has dialogue, or clothes on.

Ronin has an AMAZING car chase to rival anything in The French Connection or Bourne films, and that brutal scene where De Niro performs surgery on himself by using a mirror.

HARDCORE.

Lot of good actors in that one, too.

Yeah, I feel pretty much exactly the same way about Ronin.

Nothing incredibly memorable and certainly not a classic, but I like it.

Sean Bean, Deniro, etc. kick ass.

I haven't seen it in years, though. Own it on VHS, so I might bust it out one of these days.

Ok, I just saw One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest for the first time tonight. I had no prior knowledge of the plot, or anything at all. And I left just completely amazed. Firstly, I absolutely loved it, it was beautiful, funny, and sad. What I don't really feel quite comfortable with is the ending. I mean, The Chief escaped, and he felt "big" and that was amazing, but how did he KNOW that Mac was never going to be the same again? I just...I was so shocked by what he did. It almost felt like, yeah, The Chief got away, but for Mac it felt like the place got him in the end :(. I don't know. Can anyone offer me perhaps a better explanation, perhaps from the book? Or personal understanding?

I enjoy all three Bourne Identity movies, Matt was perfect for them

I watched Licence to Drive the other night for under a quid. OMG, isn’t it funny how if you aint seen an 80s movie for years, how fast every part of it comes back to you, and it feels more like a 20 min long movie?

Gosh, those days I fancied Corey Haim like mad, until I saw Prayer of the Rollerboys – he looked hot, but the movie was ultra-sh*te because rollerblading was the new big thing.
New hobby – lets make a movie including it!

:D

Big Trouble In Little China = the ultimate B movie imo...

Ronin is worth the price of admission for the car chase sequences alone.

I hope you know how much I unabashedly love Big Trouble in Little China. One of the movies I first watched with the lady friend and she liked it, too.

Arguably my favorite Kurt Russell/John Carpenter flick, apart from The Thing.

Glad Ronin got some love. The car chase scenes are fantastic. Everything that happens at Michael Lonsdale's (Watch the Day of the Jackal, if you have not) chateau is great. And......as Laz said, great cast.

I wish I liked Big Trouble in Little China a little more than I do. If I gots to watch Kurt Russel, I choose Escape from New York, thank you. "You're the Duke....."

it's all in the reflexes YLB...

Hollow?

Hollow.

Fuck it….

This is going to take crackerjack timing, Elfa.

I should check out Ronin then. Casino should be coming in from NetFlix today, with The Age of Innocence and The Aviator following close behind. Then Taxi Driver, Eyes Wide Shut, and both Kill Bill movies (seen them both, but not back-to-back, I don't think) are on the comp already. Could be a pretty eventful weekend.

From IGN:

Sienna joins Ridley's Robin Hood reimagining.
by Jim Vejvoda
June 18, 2008 - For her next film, British actress Sienna Miller is leaving Cobra Command behind for Sherwood Forest. Miller, who plays the Baroness in next summer's G.I. Joe, has won the female lead role of Maid Marian in Nottingham, director Ridley Scott's reimagining of the Robin Hood legend.

Miller confirmed the news during an interview with The BBC. "It's happening. I just found out. It's the most exciting news in the world," the Layer Cake hottie said, adding, "It's ridiculous. But there's this looming actor's strike, so it's not 100% sure that it's going to be made, but it's looking pretty certain."

Russell Crowe is set to star as the Sheriff of Nottingham, who has been retooled into a good guy in this Brian Helgeland-scripted version. Barring a Screen Actors Guild strike, Nottingham will be Ridley Scott's next film after A House of Lies.

I don't like Sienna Miller and Russell Crowe = douche bag... a talented douche bag I'll admit but whatever...

I like Scott though so I might keep my expectations low for this one. The part about the Sheriff Of Nottingham being a good guy makes me go

This is the only cinematic version of Robin Hood I will EVER need...

Goddam, I love that movie.

Yeah, that's why I love it...it was one of the Disney movies I really fell in love with when I was a kid.

Lady and the Tramp, Beauty and the Beast, etc.

But this was my flat-out FAVORITE as a kid...

And I rewatched it about a year ago after having not seen it since I was little...

I won't go into too many details, but I will say that tears were shed.

And then when I was the perfect age for Disney movies they hit us with Aladdin and The Lion King back to back.

Two of the best movies ever made. Period. End of sentence.

QFT

Beauty and the Beast right before them makes a superb three film run (The Little Mermaid doesn't count because Ursala scared me as a kid).

And elevated_u2_fan, shame you don't like Russell Crowe much. He may cause a bit of a ruckus in his personal life but onscreen has charisma to spare and is one of the last "man's man" left working today. His turn in 3:10 to Yuma was one of the most entertaining performances I've seen for years.

I love how blatantly racist those two are, but along with Snow White, those are the two best Disney flicks.

I said he was a talented douche bag! I haven't seen him in Yuma but I thought he was incredible in The Insider. I think he deserved an Oscar for that one and not A Beautiful Mind, which he was good in but his character wasn’t as interesting imo…

Ah OK, got the wrong gist your post. I thought it was like how I think Amy Winehouse is talented, but I still don't like any of her music or public activities. Coolies!

And Crowe won the Oscar for Gladiator. [/anal]

at the time I was but after repeat viewings it doesn't stand up that well...

Which I guess is something to consider for this Scott version of Robin Hood, both of his "epic-medievalish" movies are not the greatest; Gladiator and Kingdom Of Heaven :tsk:

I've yet to see Kingdom of Heaven, but I've heard that the extended / director's cut is meant to be a big improvement. For me the casting of Sienna Miller as Maid Marion is the biggest reason to be wary, even if Crowe and especially Scott can be very hit and miss. American Gangster was a disappointment, for a recent example.

Be interesting to see who they cast as Prince John and Robin.
