Well done.

I was trying to think of something Hot Rice related... but this will do.

Lance, my gf LOVES Miyazaki films and is insisting that I watch many of them with her, as I've seen very little of his work.

The above is an FYI.

Simple answer is that you should just watch as many of them as you can. They're all amazing. Doesn't matter where you start either I'd imagine. Nausicaa is my favorite though. One of my favorite films period, actually. Like top 10 material. Castle in the Sky is another underrated gem.

And I'll repost this, for the benefit of Miyazaki praise.

Also makes me wonder why the French trailers for Miyazaki films in particular are always so much more awesome than those of every other country.

The one for Nausicaa is surprisingly spoilerish, so just be warned for whoever hasn't seen that film yet.

Plus we got a Hot Rice title in the other Random Talk thread.

I just watched a hilarious comedy film for the first time.

It's called Gran Torino.

I've never seen Hancock.

My cousins down the shore raved about this great film Gran Torino. I saw it and am surprised that they'd have strong feelings over what was clearly a clever parody film. I think the origin of the film was that someone showed Clint Eastwood what Wikipedia was and he found his way to the page listing a bunch of Asian slur words.

If that's all, you're in for a real treat when you check out his other sort of films (Mononoke, Nausicaa, Laputa...)

Yeah, unless my memory is faulty, that's it. This is one of those genres I always like when I experience it but rarely go out of my way to do so, for whatever reason.

Worth noting, probably--I have now seen Ponyo twice. Once in Japan (in Japanese), and once in America (in English). Both were awesome, the latter one much to my surprise.

I've no doubt Ponyo's another minor classic in the works. How was the English dub? Parts of what I've heard in the Disney trailers have me a little worried.

Also, I just heard Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays a German mad scientist in the new G.I. Joe movie?

I'm so there.

The English dub was surprisingly good, given my similar concerns. Betty White and Lilly Tomlin were pretty awful, yes, and Damon sounded sort of lost...but, really, the translation is mostly to blame. At times, it was way too literal and not nearly as colloquial as it could've been (much to my surprise). The big one is this--both the Cyrus kid and the Jonas kid were WONDERFUL. Really, seriously, genuinely wonderful. They carried the movie with shocking ease. Very impressive.

I heard Miley Cyrus did a pretty solid job in Bolt as well. Hell, I heard the whole movie's pretty good, too.

Good news then, especially about the leads. But really, you got it right regarding the problem with dubs. It's never the actually voice acting so much as the issues that come up with the necessities of translation and syncing to the animation. A lot of times the script suffers as a result, even if the actual dub talent is pretty solid. I remember Howl's Moving Castle suffered from this a bit as well, even though the voice talent was pretty great all around in that one.

I refuse to watch dubed anime if I can, in the theatre it can be difficult though.

Mononoke is my favourite Myazaki film by far, the overall theme appeals to me.

So yesterday I got pretty bored and re-organized my DVDs by studio. It was fucking staggering to see how many of the better films were by Warner Brothers, and from different genres/eras/etc... and also to see who puts out the best releases for their films. I think Fox may have won out with their Collectors Series (Fight Club, the first two Alien films, The Abyss, The Fly, Predator) and the 5 Star Collection (those silver 2-discs).

That's pretty hardcore, YLB. How did you arrange them within their studio group, alphabetically, by release date, by director, genre?

First by studio: 20th Century Fox, MGM/UA, Paramount, Sony (Columbia/TriStar), Universal, Warner Bros. In some cases, like with Casino Royale, which is considered both an MGM and Sony property, I stuck it with the studio that released it.

Then in alphabetical order from there. I put Criterion releases and any smaller studios in their own sections as well.

If I do another arrangement, it'll be by genre.

Did I mention I saw Fight Club this past week? Well, I saw Fight Club this week. And it included Where Is My Mind, which was all kinds of awesome.

Awesome.

And I'm still baffled as to why anyone takes Gran Torino seriously, by the way.

It was hysterical. The first 30-40 minutes was just repeating the fact that Clint Eastwood hates:

a. Everyone.
b. Minorities.
c. Family members.
d. Religion.
e. Young People

And then they present ridiculous to motivate him to hate said people: the priest is a complete stiff with the dialogue ability of my 11 year old brother, his family members literally lack the ability to have conversation without being selfish or greedy, and every young person in his neighborhood is an idiot or in a gang. Over-the-top is an understatement.

This one kid I know who goes to NYU said that the guy who played the priest was an acting coach there. YIKES.

So it was awesome?
