I'm not offended--my case for Merzbow is the same as my case for most music that is considered "noise," like the NYC band Sightings, Neon Hunk, Zipperspy and a bunch of others.

This is not music I listen to very often. But it's music that I appreciate on an intellectual level, rather than an emotional one. It's stuff that I hear and think something to the effect of "wow, I'm so glad there is someone out there who thought to do that." It also makes me wonder about the people who *do* listen to Merzbow etc on a regular basis and ARE moved by it on an emotional level.

That explanation probably sounds really pretentious, but it's the best way I can articulate it. I guess for me, it's kinda like opera. I don't enjoy opera, but I have a lot of respect for it.

Does that make any sense at all?

tennispunk: can i ask why you like merzbow? not dissing your music taste or anything (it's excellent), but to me merzbow is just noise without much (or any) musical features about it and i want to know what part of it appeals to you. i've always wondered this.
