Hey guys, I just got this heads up from a friend and it's very much true. I'm sure most of you have Hotmail accounts, so I'm just passing it along.

Peace,
JT

In today's world we never know who has access to what information and we seem to have no control over it. Companies such as MSN have done underhanded things. Did you know that about 2 months ago MSN added 2 little boxes in all the profiles? These boxes if marked share your email with other users. One box, if ticked, gives other people the right to see your information including your address. Now MSN has taken all the passports that were created before they added this and marked YES SHARE MY INFORMATION and did not tell anyone. (!!!!)

HOW to remove your name: sign into your email account (for those with more then 1 you have to do it for all of them), click on Options then Personal Profile and scroll to the bottom ... u will see the TWO added boxes - remove the check marks and finish up.

PLEASE FWD this to everyone who has hotmail - lets not wait until it is too late (this may decrease all that junk mail that seems to have doubled lately). CHECK it out. It's true.

unfortunately this was already done a few months ago and if you didn't notice the change you're screwed. When they made the switch, some porn spammer got my email address and now I get probably 20-30 spams a day on my Hotmail account even though I changed the check box. I can't even imagine what would have happened if I hadn't been messing with my account and found that. I love my address [its my full name so works out well] but I had to get a Yahoo account as a backup if I ever get too sick of spam in Hotmail.

I have always hated Hotmail.

I'm not even a member of it anymore (I would still be using it, but my computer started giving me errors whenever I went to their site a couple years ago, and hasn't stopped) and all of a sudden I'm getting 100x more spam than I've ever gotten. Argh.

So that's why I'm getting so much spam mail on my hotmail account... I thought someone just hated me a lot and decided to add my email address to a Spam Mailing List. :D

Other than Hotmail and Yahoo, does anyone know any good *free* email services?

I actually checked into this after reading the thread.

It isn't ANY company that can see your e-mail address - it is only companies that have a partnership with MSN and their PASSPORT service. the .NET thingy.

I am a Travelocity member - and I believe they use this service, so I receive mail from them. It's not "Anyone who wantsa to have people's e-mail addresses."

Bleh- of course, I misinterpret everything as always. :D

Thanks for the info zonelistener... You're right. So it's just the annoying 'Join Hotmail 19.95' emails that are being sent? I finally thought I found out how all that spam was getting into my inbox.

You can speed registration and get personalized services at participating sites by sharing your .NET Passport information with them when you sign in.

Choose how much of your .NET Passport information Microsoft can share with other companies' .NET Passport sites at sign-in:

  • Share my e-mail address.
  • Share my first and last names.
  • Share my other registration information.

I just went into my profile and WAS able to make those changes.

Another thing I've noticed about hotmail lately, besides getting more spam mail, is that the account size seems to be less. I keep getting notifications that my account is almost out of space, when I used to be able to keep more mail in my box previously. Funny how they now charge for extra storage space AND you get more spam mail.

:| :tsk: :slant:

ROTFLMAO!!!!!!

*dies*

*gets back up*

LMAO again!

So, this is more commonplace than I thought? Everyone I know has several. I know a guy who lost his account because he forgot the password and to get it back you had to put in your birthday and zip code, but since he used a bogus one to sign up and and forgot it he was shit outa luck. Oh my aching ass..... still what they did sucks. No wonder the influx of porn and crap the last month or so.

Thanks for the warning. I'll spread the word tonight to everyone I know, whether or not they actually exist or use their given name LOL.

Wow. That is rather underhanded. Strangely, I never knew about this till now, but I never got any spam.

Actually I've never gotten a single spam on my hotmail account. It's kinda beautiful actually.

Whoa! You've got to be kidding, SkeeK! I get at least 50 spam emails per day on my hotmail account, not to mention all the emails that are put in the Junk Mail inbox. You're one lucky duck!

I'm entirely serious. Actually I might have gotten one, but that's all.

I think the secret may be in the fact that my sign-in name is 56 letters long, and i think people just don't bother with it and it also won't get randomly generated by spammers who randomly generate addresses.

I might recommend signing up with a hugely long name and seeing what happens...

It's true. I have a couple of hotmail accounts. One is my initials with my surname and I get tonnes of spam mail on that. But the other one never gets any, even though it's actually not that long, because it's not the sort of thing that would get randomly generated. It's part of a song lyric.

Just be creative, and think up something like that if you don't want spam!
