You misread things.

Not having a spouse in effect increases your adaptability score.

Yeah, me too. I put "no spouse" and it refused to let me leave the other questions blank. It dropped the score enough to disqualify me.

You can still fill the others out since it says "principle applicant OR spouse" or something like that.
