this is just taking it to new heights.

Your team is 8 outs away from the World Series, there is a pop up near the stands, your team has a play on it, you GET OUT OF THE WAY!!!

why on earth would you ever think of taking an out away from your team????

oh my goodness, you cost your team the game and quite possibly the WORLD SERIES

and they say curses are just superstition...

hilarity indeed

Office pool ideas: how long will this guy actually live?

a_cubfan_ft.jpg

He was escorted out of the park and into the hands of park security...all while things were being thrown at him and people yelled at him.

I say he lives about a day or two...until someone sees him on the street and shoots him.

it's one thing to go through life as the kid who picked their nose in school, or peed in their pants in 2nd grade at recess or something embarraasing like that. but to be the guy who stuck his hands out to catch the ball that could have been caught for an out, and contributing to your team's loss...i'm not even a cubs fan and i'd like to go out to chicago and kick that guy's ass.

if he isn't killed...he can do a few things:

- Federal Witness Relocation Plan
- Move to St. Louis
- Enter a mental hospital (dealing with that your whole life could not be easy, ask bill buckner).

I was just listening to The Score (chicago sports radio) on the way in. The announcer was coming up with names for the season's highlight reel: "Cubs 2003: The Cork and the Dork"

i mean no one play ever costs a game... but it sure can change a game. instead of 2 outs and a runner on 2nd, now prior is a bit rattled with still 1 out, throws ball 4 in the dirt... the ball gets away, runner on 2nd moves to third... first and third. pudge smacks a single, run scores... 3 to 1, 1 out, runners on first and 2nd. no big deal... game still in hand... prior gets a slow groundball to alex gonzales #1... such an easy double play ball that it might as well have been hit by mookie wilson... drops the ball... all runners safe, bases loaded. sac fly, 4-3. 2 outs... new pitcher in... dusty decides to walk the bases loaded (which i friggin hate when managers do that).. 2 balls gets the pitcher behind in the count, comes in with a fastball... smacked into the gap... all 3 runners score on the double... 7-3. add one more insurance run and before you know it, it's the bottom of the 8th and the cubs, who were once up 3-0 with only 5 outs to go... now trail by 5 runs...

the most shocking series of events in a baseball game since game 6 of the '86 series, bar none. game and series was in hand one second... a couple of fluke plays and all of a sudden you're looking at game 7.

this game right here is exactly why, even though i played basketball my whole life, baseball is the greatest game on earth. yogi said it best... it ain't over till it's over.

What a dumbass!

Sadly, this isn't the first time a fan has really messed up a play for a team. I'm all for taking out the first row or two of seats at baseball parks to add a buffer zone between players and fans.

exactly elvis... when it all comes down to it... prior doesn't throw ball 4... ball 4 doesn't get by the catcher... alex gonzalez #1 (#2 plays for the marlins, of course) makes that easy double play... then that dorky kid with glasses and headphones on is nothing more than a funny sidenote... now he's satan.

you may not believe in curses... but consider that alex gonzalez #1 hadn't made an error since early august, and led all major league shortstops in fielding percentage this year, making him a lead candidate for the NL Gold Glove at shortstop... wooooeeeeeoooooo

i didn't watch the game, but i saw the replay on CNN this morning...it looked to me like the ball was inside the stands when he caught it

it could have happened to anyone...i think if any of you had been sitting where he had been, and saw a ball coming straight for you, your natural reaction would have been to reach up and catch it if you thought it was coming right at you.

As a Brit living in London but someone who loves baseball, I didnt see the Cubs-Marlins game last night but after reading the reports at MLB.com, I just cant help but laugh at the stupid jerk as I suppose it was one of those moments when instinct takes over and he wanted a souvenir of the ball..... I could easily have dismissed it if it was a regular game but at THAT IMPORTANT GAME? NOOOOOOO!!!!

AND you know what? Its UTTERLY stupid to do it really cos if he was really after a souvenir of the ball from a Marlins player while he was rooting for the Cubs then he shouldnt have reached out to touch or catch at all. AND If I remember correctly, Cubs have a long-time tradition of throwing the ball back onto the field in disdain when the ball has cleanly homered!

Now the ball wasnt clearly coming over the fence wasnt it? But, NO it was coming down towards Moises Alou for a clean catch! *slaps head* DOH!!!!!!!! *me wishes I could walk up to the guy and tap him in the head a few times saying "Hello, are you there, pea-brain?"*

(Maybe there should have been a bit of a buffer between the fence and the stands to stop these guys reaching out for the ball!)

Still, Im very much praying and hoping for a Cubs-Sox World Series! Come on Cubs/Sox!!!!!!

I think natural reaction should be to get the hell out of the way of a hard and fast moving object. Everytime I have had a hockey puck or baseball coming towards me and my seat, I either move out of the way or shelter myself for the impact. Screw trying to catch it...I am not at a specatator sport to get a welt on my hand from a ball or puck run amuck.

You and a few million Cubs fans!

from back to the future part II... shot in the mid 80's

Marty McFly: 'Cubs win world series against Miami'?
Old Terry: Yeah. Who would've thought? 100 to 1 shot! I wish I could go back to the beginning of the season, put some money on the Cubs.
Marty McFly: I just meant Miami-...what did you just say?
Old Terry: I said I wish I could go back to the beginning of the season, put some money on the Cubbies!
