Thats right, I got it on Thursday, I am now really considering selling my 3 month old laptop and getting a Mac...........since I have had this new computer, which runs on XP I have had two major viruses and I have it firewalled and I have McAfee virus protection- what more can one do??????

My old computer, which I had since 98 ran on 95 and I never once had virus protection on it and I was on the net constantly and I never once had any trouble, so what is happening with Microsoft???? and to make things worse when I was trying to get some help as to what to do with this new virus my ISP was saying that it was a Microsoft problem, then the wanker over the phone at Microsoft was saying that he couldn't help me cause it was a problem for my virus protection company to help me with and then McAffee were saying that it was definately a Microsoft problem, so I get back on the phone and just let it rip at how CRAP their products are and I told them that I am probably going to change to Mac..............so anyone else had trouble with this?????

I'm on Windows 98 so I hope I don't get it.

Is your virus protection on automatic update?

What virus is this? Is it the one that lets you go online but doesn't let you surf or connect to your messenger or check mails? :|

That's the one I have anyway. And the gobshites at Ciudad.com.ar ( my internet provider) told me that they couldn't do anything for the time being because this virus is very evry recent and Microsoft nor Norton have a solution to fix this situation.

So I'm screwed. I don't have Internet at home. Thank God for my computer at work :madspit:

ooh, i had that one too niamh, last week. I blew up my entire computer.

I just got it up and runnign again, installed norton, and the damn virual memory seems to be low (another virus?) so I can't view any of my photos. And apparently I HAVE no viruses.

I hate computers.

okay, the lsass.exe thing just popped up.

Oz, apparently if you download the newest microsoft updates and then virus scan it should get rid of it.

I hate comptuers.

That's what killed my old computer a couple weeks ago

It's not the same name but it acted the same way, it popped up and attached itself without me clicking anything. I tried to click cancel but it froze up and when I rebooted it was already on there. When I did searches to get rid of it, it kept duplicating itself into default versions. When I kept deleting those, it attached itself to other stuff which messed up my computer when I deleted them:mad:

About buying a mac, well, anybody ever notice the macs never ever get viruses? Could it be the mac people trying to defeat Bill Gates the only way they have left, cyberterrorism?;) Don't think it's out of the question. I don't mean Steve Jobs himself, maybe not even someone who works there, but some people must have a hateful vendetta against Windows and all its users. :eyebrow:

Sounds like a conspiracy theory but I wouldn't be surprised.

Nope, I just read yesterday that just going to a web site that is infected can infect your pc.

If you all had been diligent in downloading all your patches from "Windows Update," none of this would have happened. The patch for the exploit that this virus takes advantage of has been around for eight weeks.

Also, if you run your internet through an internet router, they have a built-in firewall that deflects all these attacks. Something to look into, even if you aren't sharing your connection to need a router.

I never clicked on anything to get my virus. A gray thing with the folder and paper flying showed up and I tried to cancel but like I said it froze up and well, I've told that here and in an old thread when it first happened so I won't again. But the thing is once I had problems my computer was so unable to function I could not get online to download anything and it just kept giving me errors and locking up no matter what I tried to do so it was too late:(

It literally attached itself like a parasite. I read one story that says this new one not only does that but that you don't even have to be using the computer for it to strike :yikes: I've got ad aware downloaded and norton antivirus with this new one I hope it works.

You don't have to be actively browsing, just by being connected you can get it. I left work Friday, "locked" my computer, and when I came back on Monday my PC had the new sasser "worm." I hadn't logged off the network before I left on Friday. Thank goodness for our MIS department at work - they were able to fix everything :)

 Thanks, Melon! People, PLEASE for the sake of people like me who spend their entire days fixing computers, remember ITS NOT YOUR ISP'S FAULT!!!! It's NOT Microsoft's fault! Microsoft routinely puts out security updates and patches. All you have to do is go to Start > Windows Update; folks, it doesn't get any easier than that! Part of owning a computer is keeping it secure and up-to-date. You need to check for Windows updates every few weeks and update your antivirus' definition files every week. It's like when you have a baby you have to keep taking it to the Dr. to have shots and chek-ups or it will get sick. I know viruses suck, but they are SO easy to prevent, it's not worth getting totally enraged and frusterated over. If you're using Adaware, Spybot, and any antivirus, they're good for nothing if you don't remember to update them. The need the right definition file or they will never detect the new viruses.

well I gotta say that I didnt update my windows for ages, I kept on getting the little reminder and then the other (just before I got the worm) I did the update, which was probably about 2 months worth of updates and my McAfee has an automatic update on it. From what I understand most virus' are written for the newest version of windows, so no wonder I never got any virus' when I used 95, because it was so obselete and the majority of the world runs of Microsoft products, so why design a virus for Mac users that is only going to affect 5% of the computer population. I have used Macs before- they are the industry standard in all areas of journalism and newspaper production, here in Australia- I wonder why????? because they are a better and more reliable system, Gates just got lucky in the 80s and it sucks that his system has become the dominant product...........

oh and back to the sasser worm, I removed it by installing a security update from Microsoft and then I installed a removal tool from symantec and that fixed it all. The worst thing with these is that the crap you need to get in order to fix your computer is on the net and you cant get onto the net, so i had to stuf around on a friends computer..............anyway it is gone now

:crack: :der:

I had no idea. I always x'd those out because they slowed the system down. Maybe I could have saved my old pc

i always run windows updates and occasionally check the site too, just in case i missed something. i also have a router at home. so, i've only had one virus, EVER. in my eight years online, one virus.

however, i will say we have the sasser worm on our comps* at work. some of us use thin clients and it's only affected our comps (some still have regular old dells). i don't know who the hell got it in the first place but i want to kill them. my computer restarts about once an hour.

also, ozaurora, did you have to go into the microsoft guy so much? i'm not trying to be bitchy or start anything, but it's not his fault that the worm is out there and you got it.

anyway, i'll repeat what melon and others already said: if you run windows updates whenever they come up, have an anti-virus software, and use a router (or at least 2/3 of those, but updating windows is essential), you'll find yourself scratching your head when people talk about the problems they're having with the latest virus.

*you're probably thinking right now how could i get it at work and not at home? because at work, my thin client can't view sites. well, it can, but my asshole i.s. department (who still haven't fixed the worm problem yet, and didn't start fixing it until today) has blocked every site other than our homepage and our local ethernet. i'm sure the hotshot execs get unfiltered net access though. i do know there's one idiot i work with who blindly opens EVERY attachment he gets. i know this because i overheard him telling someone in i.s. and they replied, "you did that again?!"

These newer viruses generally take advantage of RPC exploits, meaning that they are programmed to seek out machines that do not have this RPC exploit patched and then, when they find one, they use the exploit to automatically download onto your computer. This means that you physically cannot prevent this virus from infecting your computer, unless you either download the patch or have a fantastic firewall.

RPC is something that exists only on Windows NT-based systems, meaning that those running Windows 2000 and XP will be potentially vulnerable. The old Windows 9x/ME family is not affected, because they run on an obsolete MS-DOS core and do not have RPC.

Again, make sure that, in the future, you always download the Windows Updates, because this isn't the first virus to do this, and it likely won't be the last.

Our computer tech is militant about us running windows updates at work so I apply those standards at home, too. I don't care what I'm in the middle of, when that window pops up saying I have new updates I download them immediately.

I always download the updates immediately, update my anti-virus thingy every two days, and have a firewall, but I STILL get worms no matter how many removal tools and patches I install.

Yeah, seriously. I want a Mac, but I can't afford one. Don't complain about Microsoft if you can afford a Mac!

that's because you're always at the shady porno sites.

:shifty:

Actually, I ended up with a whole bunch of porn on my computer when I hit 'download containing folder' on Soulseek, trying to get an album. I hate when people don't sort their shared files. At least it wasn't SCARY porn, though. :yikes:

Get the Mac.

That's exactly what they want you to do. Someone is sabotaging all Windows stuff so you'll get frustrated, give up and switch to Mac. It's cyberterrorism because they couldn't defeat them in the open market. It's a conspiracy I tell you! :D

No, it's not a conspiracy. The viruses are so frickin' easy to prevent, detect, and get rid of anyway. Mac people using viruses to attack PC people would be like one country using the common cold as bioterrorism. Not to mention some of the viruses were suppose to counter others (Welchia vs. Blaster, etc). Some people just have too much time on their hands.

My comp automatically tells me when there is an update.. and then I promptly download it

We use a router as well.. we have 2 comps hooked up through it. I have win2000 and daafish has winXP. Lets hope we've taken the necessary precautions cuz I'll seriously injure someone or my property if my comp blows up :|
