Well, to be fair, they did release two greatest hits compilations. One of which had one new track.

3 actually, but I was more referring to their albums of the last decade vs. U know who's.

Disintegration is one of the most amazing pieces of music ever, the guitars, the bass, the vocals it's all just amazing and really depressing.

Or if you prefer you could go with happy Cure like Just like Heaven and The Love Cats.

The Cure are such a bipolar band

I too am a huge Seventeen Seconds fan, it and Pornography are probably their most truly "goth" sounding albums. I have to be in the right mood for Faith, as it's one of the most depressing albums I know, but it's great when I'm in the right mood. That era of the band is probably my overall favorite, even though Disintegration is my favorite album.

I too would say Head on the Door and Disintegration are the best to hear first in terms of essential albums.

Okay so since we're talking about the Cure...a lot of people say The Shout Out Louds, specifically this song, sound very cure-like.

Find me a fucking Cure album similar to that and I will love you forever. seriously.

That's a pretty horrible comparison, first time I've ever seen it. Who are all these people who say they sound like The Cure, and why did you not comment when I repeatedly tried to revive a thread about the Shout Out Louds?

Let's call it a comeback, Manadiens.

Back to The Cure, this video blew me away the first time I saw it. 1979 Robert: pre-make up, pre-hair, pre-drugs, pre-fat, completely normal looking kid. Around :40 - :50 is probably the best shot.

It seriously blew my mind. On two levels: the song was just fantabulous, but also that The Cure, going by this song, are nothing like the band I expected them to be. I thought they were this first emo band in a punk era... and my interest in them waned after seeing a few pics, and even further when Robert Smith popped up on a blink182 song.

Worth getting into? An album? A best of? Just some songs maybe?
Get Disintigration. Fucking brilliant album.

Yeah go with Disintigration. Kiss Me is so uneven it's not even funny.

I would refrain from getting Disintegration as your first album, as it really appeals to people who are REALLY into The Cure, and unless you're a depression junkie you might not get into it so much.

Personally I'd suggest Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me. Someone above said it was uneven, but it's also a double album that shows the band capable of almost every style imaginable. It's a good primer, and has some of their very best songs. Then I'd go with A Head on the Door, or maybe Boys Don't Cry.

I don't know about that, it was my first Cure album and I loved it. I also don't think it's as depressing as its reputation, though the title track is absolutely mind-blowing.
