I agree with what lots of people here have said - you definitely will want to do more education too, I'm sure. I'm doing my masters in history now, but i have a BA in english lit, and I'm thinking about a PhD.

I'd say you really need to do a little bit of looking into shakespeare and see if it's what you want to spend so much time on. I spent over a year researching Yeats and it NEVER got dull to me. Therefore, I could do well - I never once wanted to put away the books and forget about it. I do love shakespeare and english lit in general, but you are contemplating a big step, it seems...just get a bit more familiar with it. When you love what you study, it's great...when you don't, well...you won't do as well and won't enjoy it. And I think education is all about being so passionate about a subject that you want to dedicate all your time. Ok, that's my best advice.

English majors of the world unite! woo! I didn't realize there were so many others out there...

Anyway, I seem to be going through a lot of the same things other people are. I'm a junior and I'll have to work on a 50 page thesis coming up VERY soon. Fortunately, I have been able to find a subject that interests me (and also a subject I want to spend my life working on), so I feel prepared to do it. But I think it's incredibly necessary for you to have an intense desire to do something like present a paper. I've found that, especially in college, you can have the most fun taking classes in specific subjects that you really enjoy. And the fun of college is that you CAN do that. So take advantage of that. Like everyone has said, think long and hard about whether you really want to invest the time and effort it would take to do something like that. If you are willing to do it, then definitely go for it!

And I think it's great that your advisor is so impressed with you. Not to bring you down, but I would say wait until you get into upper level classes until you make a decision. I've found that my upper levels (300, 400, 500 levels) have been incredibly different than any of the lower levels I had to take. There's just a different style that you might find more difficult or more stimulating.

Anyway, this is cool and I'm glad to know there are other English majors out there... I thought I was the only one! Good luck and I'd love to talk lit with anyone who wants to! I'm a complete lit dork... always have my head in some book

Peace.

I'm selling all my possessions and traveling to go to school.

I must've gotten something mixed up.
