It's been nearly a year since Katrina and life still isn't back to normal in the hardest-hit regions. Families are starting to move back and kids are going to be starting school next month but all of the schools are in desperate need of pretty much everything.
Mike Shinoda from Linkin Park, his wife and Kevin and Melissa Ryder from KROQ, through their Friends & Helpers organization, are collecting and dispersing the supplies.
I heard about this drive on the radio this morning and think it's a fantastic cause. Last year, after Katrina hit, I participated in a drive to send backpacks to displaced children who were starting schools in their temporary homes. Now that these kids are returning home, they need so much more.
Here's how to help this tax-deductible cause. The best part is you can order supplies from Target.com and have them shipped directly to New Orleans.
The need for aide in Louisiana is still great. On September 7th a group of volunteers from Friends & Helpers will travel to Louisiana to help assist in reopening 12 schools in the Louisiana Recovery School District that were shut down by the hurricane. They will provide backpacks and supplies to 2,500 students, stock the libraries with books, CDs and DVDs, set up and stock the gyms and athletic departments and outfit the classrooms with necessities for teaching so the teachers and children can return to their schools.
We are asking for your donation to help us reach our goal of helping the displaced children, families and teachers. There are many ways you can help.
