Okay, I understand your view.

But let's not dehumanize the old man who through the mouse in the fire. After all, he already had the leaves burning. The old man probably just couldn't bring himself to stomping on or taking a knife to the poor mouse. So instead, he threw the mouse onto the pre-lit fire to save himself from killing it manually (he let the fire do the dirty work).

I'm sure that next time he catches a mouse, the old man will resort to more conventional/savage methods of rodent disposal.
