House - What Is It? And Recommend Some.

Title says it all. I will attempt to try and rectify my lack of knowledge about dance music with this thread. So can someone please explain what 'house' is, and perhaps recommend a couple of tracks for me to download, or even compilations and long-players to buy?

if find most house very irritating.

however, i am surprised every now and again by the genre.
