because the director wanted to have a reason to do that shot where the camera watched the parents look for the kid in different rooms, from outside the house.

i don't know, they never explained it. i just figured he sleepwalked himself out there mid-halluncination. the parents weren't exactly the most sympathetic or observant people in the world, so they could have easily just not heard him.
