hip hop recommendations for a mix

for the last few years i've made a mix tape or cd for each of my family members as a stocking stuffer of sorts for christmas, except for my sister. because i don't want to go near the stuff she likes.

i'm hoing to tap into the knowlege of b&c (and am too lazy to search old threads).

i'd also like to get my sister listening to somehing other than 50 cent and nelly...she seems to think if it's not mainstream/on MTV, it's not good.

I've been getting into hip hop a LOT these days, so I consider myself to have a fairly good idea of what i'm talking about.
Now here are some songs you HAVE to get for her sake, and yours (because they are just that good, you see):

Talib Kweli - Get By (you have to be cold and dead to dislike this song. seriously. everyone loves it)

you can't do too bad trying to hawk Talib Kweli .. his album Quality is rather amazing, accessible. It's happy hip hop, really quite worthy of much praise imo. read the pitchfork review, they got it right. Anything you get off it will probably be catchy and intelligent and of very high quality.

Outkast is a good example of popular hip hop that is mainstream and still ubergood. So Fresh So Clean, Wheelz of Steel, Rosa Parks, 13th Floor, Jazzy Belle, Spottieottiedopaliscious, and Bombs Over Baghdad are some excellent ones i didn't mention up there. And of course Hey Ya, but that's not really hip hop. ATLiens (the album) is probably my alltime favourite album right now, it's really a work of pure brilliance in my opinion.. every single track is tight, deep, and smooth.

The Roots are very very good. all of the stuff off their new album Phrenology is accessable and very high quality... try Sacrifice (with nelly furtado), Rolling with the heat (with Talib Kweli), and the above mentioned Thought at Work.

Now I dunno how old your sister is, but some of these songs employ the old cusswords. etc. I think you are doing a good deed, it's always possible to find real high quality music that appeals to even the mainstream stickers.

I'm now listening to Talib Kweli - Get By for the 77th time in the last 3 days. Well I'm not actually counting but i might not be exaggerating.. but usually when I think 'hmmm i need to listen to it' (which is a lot) i end up listening to it 3 times in a row.

oh and the streets rule, but there's no way my sister would ever listen to them. that would be like if i tried to put the lo fidelity allstars on there...now that's an album i haven't listened to in a while...i can't remember what it was called...it's somewhere at home. how to operate with a blown mind? sounds about right.

Hey, If you like Daylight you might as well go for broke and check out the whole Labor Days album by Aesop... it's very very good . 'specially the lyrics. I'm not so much a fan of his new one Bazooka Tooth... I mean it's good, but whenever I start listening to it I just want to be listening to Labor Days instead so I haven't heard it too many times.
