Heroin Appreciation Thread!

heroin is the best

I'm referring, of course, to the Velvet Underground song...is it not one of the most amazing innovative songs of all time? what a beautiful piece of work. the simple broken two-chord progression, the heartbeat drums, the ever-changing tempo, Reed's stream of consciousness, and of course John Cale's electric viola...

I love how it starts with "I...don't know" and then ends with "And I guess that I just don't know." There are no answers in this song. only an escape. I've never done heroin but when the song reaches its crescendo I feel like I am, in fact, closing in on death.

surely this has influenced countless other songs. (Bad and Running to Stand Still?)

I used to love this song. I first heard it when I was probably 13 or 14, and I had never heard anything like it. Great song still. Probably VUs best.

As good as the original is, there's a live version on the second disc of Lou Reed's box set that's simply mind-blowing.

I love how BP Fallon describes a reunited VU's performance of it when they were opening for a Zooropa show: "boiling life-diluting lava, dark illicit miracles...crowd clapping like the Velvet Underground are tra-la-la-ing about icepops. It's cary, magnetic."

I love this song. The way it builds and then drops back down and the chaos and the softness at the same time...pretty much everything you guys said already. love

Amazing song. I get chills everytime I listen to it.

VU's finest moment.

One of my favourite songs, by VU or anyone, I just love the dark lyrics, thumping heart beat and the way it builds up/slows down until that demented crescendo. Great great song.

The thing that makes it such a great, frightening song for me isn't Cale's crazy viola (although that is indeed outstanding) but rather Reed's laconic, laid-back drawl that makes it all the more chilling.

Great song.

Yeah, I agree. I can't imagine anyone else singing it. Reed's delivery is perfect.

Interesting that the song has no bass. you don't even think about that when you listen to it.
