I just learned that a dear friend of mine from NYC had a traumatic experience last month where he slipped and fell off a cliff into Lake Champlain in Vermont. His friends who were further behind him thought he was dead because when they got to the edge of the cliff they couldn't see him. He in fact swam a quarter of a mile to the nearest pier and emerged covered in blood, shaken, in adrenaline shock, but okay. He then spent 9 hours in the emergency room getting his wounds treated.

Anyway, he's in town now and I traditionally send him home with a new mix, so I thought I'd make him one with references to water, lakes, oceans, rivers, the sea, falling in the water, jumping in the water, swimming, etc. I've ruled out rain unless I get desperate. I need your help because it has to be made by the end of the week. He's a 60+ year old man who loves music from all eras and I've got him listening to all kinds of current music.

So far I've got, just off the top of my head and without scanning my collection:

Cold Water - Damien Rice
Walk to the Water - U2
Electrical Storm - U2
Pyramid Song - Radiohead
The River - Joni Mitchell
The River - Springsteen
1,000 Oceans - Tori Amos
Liquid Diamonds - Tori Amos
Marys of the Sea - Tori Amos
Madman Across the Water - Elton John
Nightswimming - R.E.M.
Lake Charles - Lucinda Williams
Take Me to the River - Talking Heads
Smoke on the Water (but I don't want to use that)
Don't Drink the Water - DMB (I don't want to use that either)

Ok, so give me everything you've got!

Thanks. :)

Pearl Jam - Oceans
Nick Drake - River Man
Pixies - River Euphrates
Jeff Buckley - Nightmares by the Sea (although maybe not for this mix)
The Unicorns - Sea Ghost

Wow, your friend is a badass. I would've just given up and died. Fuck water, make your friend a badass mix.

"Don't Ask For The Water" - Ryan Adams
"Water" - The Who

My sister was wading with a bunch of people one day, and they were all holding hands. Her best friend lost her grip, and she ended up going down a waterfall and landing on a huge rock. She had some bad bruises but was fine otherwise. Amazing.

Maybe....

Uncle Tupelo -- High Water
Simon & Garfunkle -- Bridge Over Troubled Water
CCR (or Tina Turner) -- Proud Mary
Sinead O'Connor -- Jump in the River

Live - Run To The Water

BTW., Your friend is indeed a badass. Amazing story

This really cracked me up.

How about...
Black Water - The Doobie Brothers (I'm southern, forgive me)
Waterloo - Abba (?..er....no excuses...just a goofy song to break it up)

I'm bad at this, I can't think no more.

Badly Drawn Boy has a few songs on "The Hour of Bewilderbeast"

- Fall in a River (this is my favourite choice)
- Camping next to water
- Stone on the water

Some great suggestions here, many of which I have in my collection. Thanks everyone. :)

I just remembered Daniel Lanois' beautiful "Still Water" which I think will open the mix.

I intend to, and it will have a water theme.

Sail to the Moon: Radiohead
Oceania: Bjork
Anchor Song, also by Bjork has appropriate lyrics, but it is kind of painful to listen to.
Once in a Lifetime - Talking Heads "There is water at the bottom of the ocean!"

I was going to reccomend this song if no one brought it up. Any Daniel Lanois song is welcome on a compilation. He's just too good to ignore.
