Looking for great cover songs, as many as I can get. What's your favorite cover? Who performed the cover, who performed it originally? Preferably 80's and 90's, but other eras too. Looking for studio tracks only and only by major label artists.

The one's I've got so far that I really like are:

In Your Eyes - Peter Gabriel/SR71
Boys Of Summer - Don Henly/The Ataris
Under My Thumb - The Rolling Stones/Social Distortion.

Others I have but not overly fond of:

Wonderwall - Oasis/Ryan Adams
Fortunate Son - CCR/U2
All of the covers done by U2
Black Diamond - Kiss/The Replacements
Little Red Corvette - Prince/The Gear Daddies
Ring Of Fire - Johnny Cash/Social Distortion

All Along the Watchtower - Dylan / Hendrix
Across the Universe - The Beatles / Fiona Apple
Knives Out - Radiohead / The Flaming Lips

Dancing Days: Led Zeppelin / Stone Temple Pilots
One More Cup of Coffee: Dylan / Robert Plant
Landslide: Fleetwood Mac / Smashing Pumpkins

The Man Who Sold The World - Nirvana / David Bowie (MTV Unplugged, not studio,I know,but.....)

The Seeker - Cast / The Who

If you like Beatles covers, try the I Am Sam soundtrack. That's quite a good listen..........

suicide is painless - manic street preachers / written by Johnny Mandel (music) and Mike Altman (lyrics) (theme from M.A.S.H.)
raindrops keep falling on my head - manic street preachers/ BJ thomas
LIKE A VIRGIN - teenage fanclub/madonna (this one is FANTASTIC)
here comes your man - teenage fanclub/the pixies
maggie may - blur/rod stewart
time for livin' - the charlatans/sly and the family stone
my generation - oasis/the who
common people - william shatner with joe jackson/pulp

these are my favorites off the top of my head. sorry for the brit-poppiness of it, ho hum...

Pearl Jam has a couple of good ones...

Last Kiss,
...and more recently The Who's Love Reign O'er Me.

..also, Ray LaMontagne's cover of Gnarls Barkley's Crazy, and Snow Patrol's cover of Beyonce's Crazy In Love...

good call -
they also did that kickass version of 'Leaving Here', an early song from the Who when they were called the High Numbers (I think).
i seem to remember hearing an asskicking version of that same tune done by Motorhead...

The best cover I have ever heard is Agalloch's cover of Kneel To The Cross by Sol Invictus. Agalloch absolutely own that song.

Dream Theater's cover of U2's Red Hill Mining Town is better than the original. Same for Blackfield's cover of Aviv Geffen's Cloudy Now (if that counts, seeing that Geffen is in Blackfield), and on a similar note, it's hard to choose a favourite between Split Enz's original version of I Walk Away and Crowded House's cover of it.

Oh yeah, Straitjacket Fits' cover of Leonard Cohen's So Long Marianne is awesome too.

Because The Night - Patti Smith/Springsteen
All The Young Dudes - Mott The Hoople/Bowie
Cum On Feel The Noize - Oasis/Slade
&, IMO the very best cover version ever!

The Man Who Sold The World - LULU/Bowie.
