Hello from sunny Afrique!

Hello to all and sundry,

Yes, I am still alive and well and as of two days ago, I am an official Peace Corps Volunteer! I am moving into the capital city of Mali, called Bamako, where I will be spending my two years of service. I've been assigned to work with the Malian government in the areas of tourism and artisanat (the latter has to do with handicrafts and basically anything that people create).

Training was good. My French improved exponentially and I am pretty functional in the local language Bambara as well. My host family in the village we stayed in during training was wonderful and I became very close to them. I miss having my little brothers and sisters come running to greet me when I get home. But happily, since I am living in Bamako, I'm actually close enough to get out to the village to visit from time to time.

I have sent out a few emails during the last few months trying to better describe the sights and sounds and people. I'll try to post them soon for anyone who is interested. But for now, I just wanted to say hello and that after my 90 days of Peace Corps newbie status during which I'm not allowed to leave my region or have visitors, my door is open.

Ramadan starts tomorrow. I'm going to give fasting a try.

aka sula

Re: Hello from sunny Afrique!

It's great hearing from you again! Yesterday we had another Dutch Interference meeting and our thoughts also went out to last year when you brought us together. I'm happy to read that everything's OK with you.
