I must be the only Jew most of the people at my work have ever met. Although I'm hardly a model spokesperson for my people, I've had to explain more times this year than I ever have before what Hanukkah is and why it's celebrated....so here you go in case you're wondering too. I found this explaination online.

Hanukkah is a "Festival of Lights" to celebrate the victory of the Jewish Maccabees over the Syrians, and the rededication of the Jerusalem Temple. The holiday also commemorates the miracle of the oil that burned for eight days. The Menorah represents the eight days that the oil burned plus an extra candle to light the rest each night.
