HA HA HA!!!!

From yanks-suck.com

According to the Barnhardt Dictionary of Etymology the word Yankee was a term of contempt. Isn't that great? The Yankees named themselves after an insult! It's like calling a team the Atlanta Rednecks or the L.A. Cokeheads! Iron that on you wife-beater.

like most sports teams originating in the 1800's and early 1900's, the team "name" (yankees in this case) was probably dubbed by a sports journalist.

I highly doubt millions of dollars were spent and advertising/brand agencies were hired to come up with names Red Sox, Yankees and Athletics. Someone, I am sure, someone can find the true origin of the team name on the web.

When the American League moved the Baltimore Orioles to New York for the 1903 season, the club made its home at 168th Street and Broadway, one of the highest spots in Manhattan. The team would, therefore, be known as the "Highlanders" and their field "Hilltop Park." As early as 1905, however, the name "Yankees" began popping up in newspapers whose editors undoubtedly were searching for a shorter name for their headlines. By the time the franchise moved from decaying Hilltop Park to the Polo Grounds in 1913, it officially changed its name to the by then commonly-used "New York Yankees."
