I love how the Comedy/Musical section almost always ignores the flat-out comedies.

Juno isn't a flat-out comedy, but I see what you mean.

You'd think Hot Fuzz would get a nom over Across the Universe, since it's, you know, actually good.

Fuck Juno. Nice work, though I never expected the foreign press to actually award an American indie-comedy anyway.

I still can't believe Schnabel won over the Coens, but he's an international art figure who directed a film in France, so it shouldn't have surprised.

Atonement though...wow. I guess a very American film (in setting and in theme) like No Country was just too local for them.

Yes, though it's lame that Jonny Greenwood didn't even get nominated. Unfortunately, I was worried Dario Marianelli was his main competition even before tonight's win.

Johnny Depp.........

I'm sorry about the writer's strike but I think that the idea of giving the awards at a press conference was FABULOUS!

The important thing was the awards, not who was wearing what and who came with who.

This was an AWARDS show and that's just what they did - hand out awards. It doesn't matter what the nominee was wearing, it matters that he was acknowledged for his/her talent - isn't that what really matters?

Do you know that the first academy awards were handed out at a dinner and the whole thing took half an hour? Now THAT's the way to do it.....

Marion Cotillard - La Vie En Rose :applaud: One of the most astonishing performances by any actor I've ever seen.

And personally I think that the dresses and who came with who is the only reason why anyone cares about Golden Globes. It doesn't really have the prestige of Oscars or even SAG awards.

 When that category came up I thought to myself, if the Globes have any shred of integrity whatsoever, the award must go to Cotillard although I personally think it was in the totally wrong category. It should have been best actress in a drama. It wasn't a frigging comedy or a musical!

Not only was it not a musical, but Cotillard was lip-synching to Piaf's recordings. It's nice that she was able to get recognized, because I'm not entirely sure she would have beat Christie in the dramatic category.

was the press conference televised? i forgot all about this last night:|

Believe me, you didn't miss much. I got home and turned it on about halfway through. I could only watch for 3 or 4 minutes before i said "fuck this shit" and looked up the winners online.

Eddie Vedder winning was great! I'm bummed i didn't get to see him give a speech. Love him!

I think it's difficult to compare these two performances, because they're different types of acting, imo. Christie's performance in 'Away From Her' is a much more subtle and understated performance for the most part, whereas Cotillard's performance in 'La Vie En Rose' was a more typical tons-of-emotion flex-your-acting-muscles type of role. I think both styles were exactly what was needed/required of their respective roles, and I think both actresses were superb, but I think the contrast in styles there makes them hard to compare.

However, just going by the gut instincts I had after each film, Cotillard wow-ed me more.

I can't make a good argument why any winner in any category is a bad choice.

It does seem that there are often Oscar winners that I think win for the wrong reasons.

So these Globes look pretty good to me.

I especially like how the T V winners came out.

Mad Men is outstanding,
and most likely will be overlooked in the other Award shows.

Marion Cotillard - La Vie En Rose

it will be interesting to see what the Academy does here.
