GIMME SHELTER appreciation thread.

Who ever sang that vocal solo during the "rape, murder..." part, she had the best voice ever recorded.

Plus, whenever Lisa Fischer sings it with the Stones on stage today, she owns the stadium/arena.

Discuss amongst yourselves.

I've been kicking around the idea of writing a paper on Scorsese using Gimme Shelter as a thematic lynchpin. It works so well in his films, and I believe he's used it three times at least. But the notions of paranoia and imminent danger definitely speak to everything, and tie nicely into his explorations of male identity.

Sorry, it's a really great song, too. I just get excited about movies.

My favorite Stones song. Killer stuff.

I believe the woman who sings in the song is Merry Clayton. Not sure what else she did, but she did have a song on the Dirty Dancing soundtrack. (Ohhh, YES! We're gonna fall in love, and it feels so right ... YES! We're gonna make love, it's gonna be tooniiiiight! )

If I recall correctly, she was very pregnant at the time the song was recorded. Not sure what that has to do with the price of tea in China, but it's just one of those random pieces of trivia that stuck in my head.

(Unless I'm completely wrong and misremembering this entire post ... except about it being my favorite Stones song.)

I love this song so very much. My favourite Stones song and probably in my top ten songs ever. The female vocal on the original is absolutely fanastic! And yes...Lisa Fischer does a great job too. She nails it on that Twickenham DVD.

I think Scorcese uses it in every mob-based movie he does. I know for sure he used it in Casino.

Definitely in my Stones Top 5

The best Stones song.

And yeah, Scorsese has used it in 3 films: Goodfellas, Casino and The Departed.

such a tight song. i always tend to think that the Stones were just a bunch of hooligans, but then you listen to Gimme Shelter and Sympathy for the Devil. . .

as for the Departed, i wish Scorsese had played it at the very end too

I would say that it is number two from the Stones, falling only behind Can't You Hear Me Knocking.
