I've been telling myself I would go and teach myself the Piano that is out in my garage and this might either inspire me or discourage me. Nice choice, Swallow. O'Conor is a good pianist, I like his Beethoven. The String Quartets are also really good. The Cleveland Quartet has a good complete series.

The Andante cantabile from the Pathetique was the first piece I performed in public (at church), and it's always been one of my favorites. The Appasionata is probably my favorite Beethoven sonata, but there are just so many good ones it's hard to narrow it down. The Tempest, Pastorale, Hammerklavier, Waldstein and Les Adieux are all great. I think the Tempest and Pastorale are my favorites out of that bunch. Out of the non-named ones, Op. 2 #1, Op. 2 #3, Op. 10 #1, Op. 26, Op. 27 #1, Op. 31 #3, and Op. 111 are standouts imo. (though all of the sonatas are interesting, really). Op. 111 was the last piano piece Beethoven wrote, when he was basically completely deaf, and there's so much emotion in it, especially in the last movement - it just sounds like such a relief of tension, almost like he's making peace with himself finally - it's quite something.

I've played Op. 10 No. 1, Op. 26, the Pathetique, the Tempest, Pastorale, and Op. 90. I really should start work on another one...

Thanks for sharing your thoughts Dieman. I always love hearing you talk about classical music, you do it with such a longing and deep appreciation that it makes me wish I had been taking Piano lessons since I was old enough to sit straight. From what I remember you saying you don't play as much since you have finished school right? You seem to still have such a passion for it you should keep on kicking major piano ass, I'd love to hear you play. I would love to have a jam session with a pianist, Piano/Drum/Bass trios are such a great combination. I am so in love with music right now...I'm on disc 3 and loving it.

Actually, I've been playing more often lately. Not the 4-5 hours/day I did in my last couple years of college, but I try to get in at least an hour and a half a day. Today I did about 3 hours. I grew up listening to classical music, and playing piano is one of my really big passions, and there's just such a huge variety in classical music that I don't think I'll ever get tired of playing it. You could spend your entire life studying classical music and still leave big areas completely untouched, and that's not even getting into jazz and more modern styles.

I mean, even listening to Beethoven, there's such a variety from his earlier work to his late work, and he's only one small (albeit important) stroke on the huge canvas of classical music.

How do you think Beethoven rates compared to Mozart, Bach and other great composers on what he wrote for piano?

His piano compositions are my favorite so far, and if there is anything better I'd love to hear it.

I much prefer Beethoven to Mozart, but it's kind of hard to compare Beethoven to Bach. It's been said that in piano music, Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier is the Old Testament, and Beethoven's sonatas are the New Testament.

In terms of impact on the music scene, I'd rate Bach and Beethoven about equal, and Mozart slightly behind them, but still very important. To give you an idea of how huge Bach's shadow was, even in Beethoven's day, Beethoven strongly believed that practicing the Well-Tempered Clavier daily was one of the best ways to achieve good technique at the piano. Even Chopin, who might seem like he doesn't have much to do with Bach, said something to the effect that every piece of music Bach wrote was flawless.

As far as piano compositions, you're really only scratching the surface. I'd definitely check out Chopin - the Polonaises, Ballades and Scherzos are impressive works, he also has a couple sonatas, and Rachmaninoff's Etudes and Preludes are also incredible. Then there's Debussy's Preludes, and Liszt's Years of Pilgrimage and transcendental etudes and transcriptions, and Schubert's Impromptus, and Scriabins Etudes, and Brahm's Intermezzos...you get the idea.

Brahms has a style somewhat similar to Beethoven, although more romantic, you'd probably dig his music a lot.
