Ah, fanboys. Why do they exist, and what is their purpose?
Well I guess the best way to describe why there is such virile angst between fanboys is to look at other pastimes such as sports and reality tv. In both scenarios there is a heated sense of competition. I think to say that one person would feel better if they just bought all systems, is like saying one person would enjoy sports more if they rooted for all teams. No one likes to be a fan of everything, it's boring. And gamers, as we all know, hate when things are boring. It makes things alot more interesting and gives people a rush of energy and excitement to argue for your side, and why you're #1.
I would suggest that perhaps companies benifit from fanboyism. Gamers do too. If each company is trying to knab certain groups from their core beliefs in order to bring them over to their product instead, it leads to better results in product design and quality. When fanboys cease to be loyal to one company, and everyone buys all consoles and handhelds, no innovation or evolution will occur in the gaming industry. Each company will just put out the same product again and again with little variation
because there will be no group of fanatics to say "my console is better than yours" "these games are better than those"
Some people can take it too far, and act really immature about it. But in general, I think fanboyism is what drives the industry upward in order to see whos camp can be top dog. Everyone loves a good fight, and that's what draws fanboys to battle constantly with the opposition. We all wanna see who will win in the end, so we buy more software and hardware for the team we love. In the end, no one will win besides the businesses that get our money.
It's a neverending war.
