Just a comment on a post from the previous thread. This is in relation to what ARW posted about how much to feed Wesley.

I think your vet has given good advice about the half can twice a day method. It does keep them lean, fit and healthy. But don't forget to make him run and jump to keep him in tip top shape.

We have a similar feeding pattern for Keto.

He gets half a can in the morning and the remaining half in the evening. He has a bowl of dry food which is always full and available to him 24/7. He just free ranges and eats the dry food whenever he wants. Surprisingly he does not overeat but only goes over and snacks every now and then.

I know this may not work out for every cat though you you might have to regulate the dry food as well.

Wesley is soooo active now that he feels better. He's up and down the steps constantly. We live on a pond so there's an endless supply of bird/duck life activity day and night with different views throughout the house. He's managed to figure this out already so he gets quite the workout each day, even when he was sick. A few days ago he wouldn't eat a thing and now I feel like he's not eating enough. I don't want to do the endless bowl because I think he would eat it all. I could be wrong but right now I'm still trying to figure him out. Between everyone that I live with we're able to feed him 4 times a day. He gets 2 wet meals and then I've been giving him 2 dry but it's really a little less than 1/4 of a cup. I feel like that's too much extra food giving him that much dry but he inhales it so maybe it's not enough. My main problem is right now I only have 2 bowls for him so tomorrow I'm going to get a few extra and then maybe I'll try the endless supply of dry and see how he does.

Yup, just slowly try different patterns until you figure out what fits him best. Although, remember to do these changes gradually.

The "always filled" dry food bowl does not work with every cat of course. As a natural instinct any cat, in fact any animal on the planet, will eat every piece of food that is in front of them. Its that old survival instinct that makes them feel like there's no guarantee where the next meal is coming from.

Sometimes if you start from when they're young and always have food around and available to them, they start mellowing out and don't bother with finishing everything in sight.

There's this elderly woman I hang out with (she's 74, but I enjoy her company immensely) and she's got a cat named DC (stands for "damn cat" because he's always "running around and tearing shit up"). She absolutely adores this cat and, a few months ago, I recorded me & DC on the treadmill (apparently he always does this)...

he's a little terror. I can't believe this is the same kitty from a week ago. I couldn't tell last week how sick he was (until the hunger strike happened) or if he was really just that calm. He's a psycho that now sleeps in my bathroom because he won't stop causing trouble in my room at night and he's not allowed to roam free while everyone is asleep. I bought an extra water dish for the bathroom and I put some toys in there. He likes to hang out in my towels so that's where he sleeps now. I would love it if he would just sleep with me but he's too much of a trouble maker for that right now. Maybe once he chills out a bit I'll try it again but right now I don't trust him.

no our house is open. The only doors are bedroom/bathroom/closet doors. My bathroom is fairly big so he has room to roam in there. We have a spare bedroom across the hall from me that doesn't have much in it right now. I was going to keep him in there at night but I want to make sure he has access to his litter. He howled the first night, which completely broke my heart, but he didn't even make a peep last night. When I went to feed him this morning he was snoring in my towels and didn't want to get up. I feel like a rotten kitty momma for locking him up but I need to sleep and I need to make sure he's safe so this is the only way. We've found him in all sorts of spots he shouldn't be in so I can only imagine what would happen if he were free to run around for the night.

It started because he broke a picture frame by jumping up on my tv cart. Once the frame broke he tried to play with a piece of broken glass. I almost fainted when I saw that. The last thing I need is for him to cut himself like that. My parents have a lot of breakable crap, including a few glass tables upstairs, so I just can't let him be on his own at night. There's never a time that he's alone during the day for more than an hour or two but he has the ducks in the pond to stalk so he doesn't get into as much trouble during the day as he does at night.

is there a calming spray I can get for Wesley to relax him at night? My sister bought something for Lily to adjust to the new house so she thought maybe I should get it for him. All of the ones I've found online are for stress related situations. I don't know if I would call his wild energy "stress related" other than it's causing me stress.

Also, try to get him tired by making him run around in the evening before you go to bed. That way he will spend all his energy and get exhausted and most probably sleep through the night.

Wesley LOVES that! I bought him a mouse on a string and naturally the mouse snapped off the end immediately. But the remaining string has already provided endless playing by him.


So I bought some relaxation spray at Petsmart today. I just sprayed it like 10 minutes ago in all of our rooms downstairs and all of a sudden he's super hyper. I thought it was supposed to relax him! It says right on the package that it promotes good behavior but I don't think climbing in the entertainment center, again after being yelled at twice yesterday for doing that, is good behavior!
