its all about mood sometimes, but which Cds are just brill for you to plug in when you feel like the whole world is against you or youre feeling really pissed off?

heres a list

Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral - you want a record thats a bit fcked up, and tells you youre feeling depressed? plug this record in and youre in prozac heaven!

The Cure - Disintegration - nice record for anyone to listen to if youre feeling isolated or got dumped! the title track is a thing of beauty

The Cure - Pornography - "it doesnt matter if we all die" interesting first line for the album isnt it?

Depeche Mode - Songs of Faith and Devotion / Violator - depeche mode = depressed mode?

Manic Street Preachers - The Holy Bible - some of the lyrics of this album is fcked beyond comprehension

Soundgarden does it for me...but they get me hyper and angry
I've been in a mood lately and The Cure "Pictures of you" is fitting my mood perfectly...except it's making me cry everytime
Let me think about some others.

Pearl Jam and the Tragically Hip would be my choices.

Lots of dark brooding references with some wit thrown in for good measure.

The perfect end to a crappy day.

I almost forgot - U2.

The perfect beginning, middle or end to everyday.

I've got a mixture CD of some really sad songs. It's good to go with the mood and have a big ole cry sometimes, imho. Somehow it feels very cleansing. Music can't really lift me from serious sadness, only time does that.

Bright Eyes - Fevers And Mirrors - I've spent many nights driving around and crying my eyes out while blasting that disc.

Ryan Adams - Love Is Hell - A quote from Ryan about it: "I wanted to make a druggy suicide record; a record that really sounded like cracking up."

Whiskeytown - Pneumonia - This particularly hits me hard when I am lonesome for my hometown and my friends there.

Palace Music - Arise, therefore

it tells me that it is possible to resign to the sadness that is life without being defeated by it

I'm going through a divorce right now and Love is Hell 1 & 2 and Rock n Roll are three discs I just can't get enough of.

Confession...
I've never really listened to Ryan Adams.
I've heard "when the stars go blue", and I know people here are big fans...but I just don't know any of his music.
I'm kind of going through some funny emotions now and I'm thinking I need to pick up this album you all are talking about (Love is hell)-is it two albums?
Thanks
Mrs.Clayton

I never heard any of his solo stuff except 'So Alive' on MTV2, I had liked Wiskeytown stuff so the next day I went out and bought Love is Hell Pt.1 and 2 and Rock n Roll. He's now my new obsession.

Love is Hell is 2 EPs. Check out his website, you can stream his songs there.

Hmmmm, so many.

For differing reasons:

The Cure - (though not as gothy as others mentioned here before, 'Faith' is probably their most depressing album in my opinion)
AFI - Many songs of the depressing nature
Bouncing Souls - (they have so many uplifting songs, it's good stuff to un-depress yourself to  )
Bauhaus - Not necessarily depressing, but you cant get much darker
Radiohead - Many a depressing/sad song
The Smiths - Many a depressing/sad song
Minor Threat - Pure anger, can feel good when depressed
Beck - 'Sea Change' album, pretty sad stuff

That's all I can think of right now (or all I want to name so that I dont look too goth  )

barenaked ladies - born on a pirate ship
dropkick murphys - sing loud sing proud (any album really)
nine inch nails (any album)

classic music
U2 (AB principally)
Coldplay
Travis
Moby
Super Furry Animals
Interpol
Philip Glass
Deftones
brit pop in general
etc.

Where should I start?

I love suggesting Gold because it is my favorite album...AND it has the most songs. :D I would definitely pick up both of the Love Is Hell EPs.

u2 - achtung baby, pop
radiohead - okcomputer, kidA, amensiac, hail to the thief
prayer chain - whirlpool ep, shawl, mercury, antarctica
smashing pumpkins - siamese dreams, mellon collie & the infinite sadness
bob dylan - time out of mind
pearl jam - ten
nirvana - mtv unplugged
pink floyd - wish you were here; dark side of the moon
nick drake - five leaes left, bryter layter, pink moon

to name a few..

rem-automatic for the people (the last 2 songs get me...plus everybody hurts makes me cry when i'm already sad)

beck-sea change (man...if i want to just brood...this is the one)

me without you- [a-->b] life (for being more metal//harder rock than anything else i listen to...this has some super sad lyrics)

when i'm sad i like to either get it out via crying, or just brood in my problems for a while...so i listen to sad songs.

This is also my suggestion. It's a great record when you're feeling down. When I listen to it I hear somebody who's feeling even more depressed. In fact, Dylan sounds so depressed I get happy. :)

As for other great suggestions... :hmm:

I get back to that later.

C ya!

Marty

Counting Crows - August and Everything After

No other album has 'been there for me' like that one. I feel like I owe my life to it.

Other good artists/albums/songs:

Radiohead - lots of OK Computer, Street Spirit, How to Disappear Completely, Kid A, Fake Plastic Trees, Pyramid Song
Coldplay - A Rush of Blood to the Head album
AFI - Sing the Sorrow (especially the whole ...But Home Is Nowhere track, God Called In Sick Today
Tori Amos - Gold Dust, Northern Lad, Hey Jupiter, Putting the Damage On, most of Little Earthquakes
Tracy Chapman - New Beginning album, Fast Car
Manic Street Preachers - Door to the River
Placebo - Burger Queen, Without You I'm Nothing, Centrefolds, Lady of the Flowers, My Sweet Prince
REM - most of Out of Time

Soul Asylum. They are so depressing, but I probably indentify more with their lyrics than those of any other band.

R.E.M-Automatic for the people- When you need to wallow in your sadness a bit, This record is good, because it's melancholy but uplifting.

Lauryn Hill- The miseducation of...- When I feel resentful or if someone does you wrong, this album makes me confident that people will get what they deserve.

The Polyphonic spree-The beginning stages of.....: Good for cheering you up, but not good for when you you feel violent around happy people. The same goes for The Flaming Lips- Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots.

Garbage-Garbage: Good if you're angry and down.

That's my opinion anyway.

Yeah, I need to go out and get some Ryan Adams stuff too. I love everything I've heard of his so far. I watched MTV's making the video for So Alive and Ryan looks like he's crazy. But in a good way.

Radiohead- The Bends. that album i'd almost call one of my friends.

Doves - last broadcast is good for that, too

the cure at their most miserable is a stroke of pure genius

but the key to them is listening to their albums in full, at the end of Untitled on Disintegration listening to the mesmerising and oh-so-cold guitar solo, you feel all cleansed for some unknown reason, that there is suddenly a reason to live life again, even if you are a miserable sob

to wallow & cry, which eventually gets me over it:
Elbow - Asleep in the back
Nick Drake - pretty much everything
Neil Young
Damien Rice - O
The verve
Beth Orton - central reservation

to skip the wallowing stage:
Charlatans - wonderland (few things make me happier than a dancing tim burgess and a lemur imitation)
Chemical Brothers
Ed Harcourt
the frames
