I have noticed on here and in other boards that when some people post their e-mail address it looks like this:

usernamehere at hotmail dot com

instead of
usernamehere@hotmail.com

what gives?

Possibly because people don't want to share their addy with spammers so they disguise it to prevent bots from picking it up.

I believe it is to guard against people/programs that troll around looking for addresses to spam. I think it is harder to see/find the addresses when they aren't in the usual form of address@email.com.

But I could be wrong...

Yes. It thwarts spam bots, and this site is a very easy target.

Hotmail is really really bad. I have it and I get tons of spam a day. I might have to change my email address again.

I am mad at my msn address. Within the past 2 weeks I have received way too many pieces of spam that is not being placed in the junk mail box.

I think there's these things called spiders that gather addresses posted on the web. They're not sophisticated enough to translate lar3 @ calvin . edu into lar3@calvin.edu so some people like to post it the first way to be safe. I personally don't care b/c we have this thing called Barracuda that filters over 50% of spam before it even hits my own personal block list and filtering rules. I can imagine for the freebie accounts like yahoo and hotmail it would be a problem.

I know its not the case here but some sites such as Classmates.com do not allow you to post your email addy to another member, therefore, you have to use them ($$) to reach friends...

Most posters write their email addy into their messages....

"you can reach me at doggydo at hot mail dot com"

as an example... if you wrote that as doggydo@hotmail.com

Classmates.com will replace it with ************...
