dvd burning help

does anyone know a good free program to convert avi files into mpeg files? I have the roxio dvd software that came with my lacie dvd burner, and for some reason a lot of avi files won't show up, and work. Its rather odd that some do, and other don't so any help or suggestions would be amazing.

Hope this helps! Some are progs cough illegal as you can tell by the serial for one of them.....
