Drummers need love, too

I've dabbled myself with the guitar, but I know very little about the technical aspects of drumming. My brother did some drumming back in the day, and now his son is a drummer, as well. I'm sure their knowledge would put me to shame. My brother's favourite drummers include Ginger Baker (Cream) and Charlie Watts.

Anyway, it occured to me earlier, drummers mostly provide rhythm and background noise, and that for me at least, very few make an impact, they're just part of the song. However, there are a few drummers that I consistently notice when listening to music. Honestly, I don't know what it is about them that makes me take notice, I just do.

Drummers that I actually notice and appreciate include (I know this is cliche, being Interference, but it's true!) Larry Mullen, Travis Barker of Blink 182/Boxcar Racer/(+44), Taylor Hawkins of the Foo Fighters, and Tyler Stewart of the Barenaked Ladies.

What drummers do you appreciate? Any drummers out there that would care to fill us in on the technique of various drummers?

There's a longstnading joke in Canada re: Neil Peart - the biggest drumkit does not the greatest drummer make.

However, from knowing your musical knowledge, I'm sure you have reasons for choosing him. What is/are it/they?


Agree with some of the other choices - many great drummers seem to come from jazz backgrounds.

And while I haven't been a Rush fan for a while, Neil Peart was awesome the times I saw him back in the 80s.

It all starts with Ringo, but then heads over to Watt, Moon and Bonham. But you gotta love Phil Rudd of AC/DC (so simple yet so powerful, think of "Back In Black") Phil Collins, who colored so many songs in the 80's with his drumming. Brad Wilk of Rage and Audioslave, Tre Cool and Tommy Lee lately. Chad Smith has one funky backbeat. The heavy hitters like Alex Van Halen and Eric Kretz of STP make me bob my head back and forth. Cozy Powell who hit the drums so hard he'd drive nails through 2X4's with his sticks and yet could play softly when necessary.

Bun E. Carlos of Cheap Trick...those beats are legendary. Omar Hakim who's played with everyone and every style. Manu Katche who killed it on Peter Gabriel's "So" album.

Oh and the incomparable Larry Mullen Jr. A drummer who's style is so styleless it can't be copied...oh and me too....I bang 'em with the best (when the best have an off day).

I don't know about drumming technical stuff but the drummers I really noticed in bands (not counting Larry) are Keith Moon and Lars Ulrich.
