Smile, you're reading my post
i heard them on one of our statiosn that never plays them, yesterday and thought how strange it was. there is only one station out of about 6 rock stations in sydney that plays them usually. this happens yet they are a very well known, hugely popular band here.

what about your cities?

The only songs they play where I live are "Creep" and "Karma Police".

I guess its better than nothing.

ive wondered about this too.

here, they only play creep on occassion. im sure radiohead would rather have us hear nothing than that song.

they did play optimistic for a while, now they never do.

they also used to play paranoid android all the time, and that was a huge hit.

so, really i only hear them on one station about once a month if im lucky. that song being creep. as i said.

Creep and Karma Police are the only songs played regularly

they played Optimistic when it was first out, and then Knives Out for a while too, they used to play High & Dry back in the day, and Paranoid Android, but never anymore

Man, why are you so down on creep, zoo?
That is the radiohead song that first made my jaws drop and my mouth to salivate profusely.

I mean. I remember seeing it first as a live video and I was blown away at how they go into the course. So amazing!

Its a classic and I don't really know how anyone could pick any bad parts in it!

Thom had an interview a long time ago about that song. And the interviewer said how the whole world can relate to that kind of depression and thom just laughed and said the whole thing was written as a satirical piece. Kinda making light of all these angst-filled depressive maniac teen-agers.

I thought that was cool.

Anywoo.

what exactly about the lyrics? they're mediocre, but certainly are not "bad" (no worse than say, Elevation)

it's a good song, and Radiohead have obviously gotten over there resentment towards, by playing it a few times towards the end of last year's tour

I don't think they ever necessarily "hated" the song, they just resented the fact that with all the music they've ever written over the years, radio stations will only play that song, I remember Thom was a bit annoyed that radio stations picked Optimistic to start playing as the single from Kid A, not that they didn't like the song, it's just they would rather have something like National Anthem, Idiotheque or Morning Bell played on the radio, since there is absolutely nothing on the radio that sounds remotely like these tracks, yet radio stations picked out the one track on the album with some heavy guitars licks and a more traditional chord sequence and arrangement

Like I said the lyrics are more satirical than anything.

But put cleverness aside and you still have some great words.

I wish I had a perfect body
I wish I had a perfect soul

Basstrap, I dont want to get your back up but they aren't really great words are they? I've said those things before and it wasn't great when I did. If you and I talked conversationally, and i said those exact words, you wouldn't be astounded at my brilliance, you'd most likely think, get some confidence!

Like zoomanda originally said though, radiohead get basically no airplay here in Sydney, which leads me to believe they are popular simply cos its cool to like them. I have never seen a band get as huge as they have without any commercial assistance at all.

Radiohead does indeed get heavy "commercial assistance" from constantly being praised by music critics, throw in a few Grammys, countless awards for their videos and a swarm of bands that have emulated the sound of their early music -- and you have quite a great deal of marketing and hype

and btw, Kid A debuted at #1 in the United States, now obviously it hasn't gone on to sell 4 million copies in the US like some other band's record who shall remain nameless, but then again, you won't find people the same people who are buying Kid A buying the latest N'SYnc and Britney Spears' records, or the latest from Kid Rock and Bon Jovi

I'm trying to put things in perspective for you here, and I'm also saying that I don't think Radiohead is as "huge" as you think they are -- at least not with casual music fans who wouldn't be bothered, whereas they would easily snatch up the latest U2 or Rolling Stones cd

now look at a band like the Velvet Underground and the career of Lou Reed: they are considered one of the most innovative and influential bands in the history of music, but how many songs of theirs does the average music fan know? as you hum the bassline to "Walk On the Wild Side," think about that; U2 made "Satellite of Love" known to their fans, but would you say the only reason they were put in the rock n' roll hall of fame and are so immensely respected by the music world was because it's "cool to like them?"

don't try to diminish Radiohead's significance while taking a shot at their fan base by implying that people only like them because it's "cool" to

they don't sell records on the same level as someone like U2, and they aren't asked to perform on all the music, tv and sports shows, and they don't sell-out 50 to 100 show arena or stadium tours, nor do they charge $85 or $130 in the process, but they do sell-out the shows that they have, and they have gained a very nice following for themselves of very loyal, devoted fans; they've had to work very hard for it over the last ten years, and they've had to earn it through the merits of their music

Very nicely said.

It is impossible to rebutt that so nobody even try.

but again, I'd like to say that it is not fair to give the impression that U2 sell all their tickets for 85 or 130 dollars. There are plenty of 45 dollar tickets which is only half over what most indie bands charge.

sure, I'm not saying U2 are only doing this, they are actually one of the few top acts like that offering top seats at affordable rates

but this is just one way of showing that Radihead are not as massively "popular" as someone like U2, and yet they do manage to sell-out shows, so my point is there are plenty of Radiohead fans, and it's misguided to imply that Radiohead have reached the levels of someone like U2 because everyone thinks it's "cool to like them," without really caring a snot about their music, in fact, I'm saying they don't have the added support of fringe fans that other pop groups have, which becomes more baggage in the case of some bands, who often cater to these fringe fans, they'll be none of that from Radiohead :)

true, thats how it stands now.

You either love them or hate them.

There was the breif era surrounding The Bends when Radiohead were seen as completely accessible, but I've not met anyone who has said " think Kid A is alright. I can listen to it sometimes"
they either say
"fucking brilliant"
or
"a fucking waste of time"

ACtually I think Radiohead are very popular here because their fans like their music.
I have a lot of friends and family who love Radiohead. JJJ(Australian Broadcasting Commission) is our non commercial youth station here and they and RAGE(ABC music show)support Radiohead a lot. You'll find that the commerical radio stations dont play a lot of Radiohead because they consider them too "out there" and the mainstream who listen to their stations won't want that kind of music played.
Thats all its about.
Sad, really. But I think Radiohead like it that way anyhow, so who really cares, anyway!

Geez Wanderer, you are good at taking things the wrong way. First off, there was no criticism in my thread, so dont get defensive. To me, they dont get commercial assistance by having virtually no radio air time here. I cant speak for every other town/city in the world, but I can assure you there are plenty of fans here in Sydney. As for critics giving them excellent reviews, well...I really think its because they um...are liked? Not because some PR person is doing a great job. Yes it helps to get lots of good reviews doesnt it? It spreads the word, makes the average Joe aware. But radiohead dont have a massive PR machine blowing a gasket to keep them at number 1. Radio DJ's rarely mention them, they dont do yearly world sell out shows. They dont perform massive world onslaughts like U2 do. They have none of that caper yet are still regarded by many as one of the best bands of our time. They dont have to churn out album after album to keep in everyone's memories. They are allowed the luxury of releasing what they want when they are ready. Some '5 minutes of fame' bands aren't allowed that.
They earned their fame in a much more obtuse way than so many bands around now. Much like your example of The Velvet Underground. So many bands just wouldnt make it based on that or with little bits of help from word of mouth, praising reviews, 1 or 2 commercial hits, fan clubs, the internet, whatever. Radiohead have done that. I was simply making a statement at how they got so big without so much external assistance.
It seems you have a slightly different definition of commercialism too. I am not a fan, and hardly ever hear of them. You are and of course notice any bit of news on them, sure they make awards nights, they get Grammys, but so do lots of singers and bands who are in the same category. I would not compare the hype you described to groups like Creed, Destinys Child, Eminem, the spice girls...etc etc etc. take away the support they get and would those groups be in the same place as Radiohead? I doubt it. Everyone would forget them.

Argh. I hate it when people take something I say the wrong way then tell me I'm wrong.

Anyway. Last point. I said it seems they are popular because it seems cool to like them. Of course it isnt necessarily fact. We would have to ask every RH fan why they do to prove that. (I take it you didnt notice the faint sarcasm?) But to explain further there is definately an aspect of a kind cult kind of following to them. To genuine music fans, the real diehards of the rock kind of genre there are many RH types. For people looking to see new music thats about, who want to hear something new or different, Radiohead are one of them. A band you hear about, not a band you actually 'hear'.

If you have taken offense well not much I can do.

offended? no, not really! you wanted to talk about the phenomenon called radiohead, I gave you some reasons why they are so well-known and have such a huge following despite an apparent lack of commercial support

really AH, you're the only one that seems deffensive here, you don't seem to appreciate having someone contradict your theories, oh well!! no worries :)

Oh :p to you then.
please accept my deepest apologies for thinking you were getting defensive.

Ha. Ha. Seriously though, I'm no fan but for the reasons I stated they deserve all the respect they get.

Dag.

OH my god.. Fake Plastic Trees is on the radio.

* q tips ears to make sure I'm hearing this right

I remember hearing high and dry on the radio twice in 1995, and saying to myself "this song is a ripoff of "stay"" , which it kind of is, although I do love it now.

other than that, no.:lemon:

yes, they are in heavy rotation on CD101 here in columbus, ohio. great radio station. if you want to give a listen sometime go to www.cd101.com

I never hear anything from OK Computer on. The older stuff pops up on my radio from time to time.

This is why I always play the newer stuff on my (university) radio show when I get the chance, since nobody else does.
