I'm listening to 'Freak Scene' by Dinosaur Jr. now, and while I think it's a bit of a stretch to call it my 'theme song' (I don't know, I haven't really thought of what mine might be) I can see it being a song that might sum up someone's life and ideology in a nut shell.

So yeah, do you have a theme song? Or perhaps you and your significant other? What is it and why? Post lyrics if you like.

I think I'd have to go with "Life Is Beautiful" by Ryan Adams. It just makes my soul feel warm...makes me smile...reminds me of the good.

~~~
You plant a rose
And if the rose comes up
You're thankful to God
And when it doesn't, you cuss him
You raise a child
And when the child grows up
You got to learn to let go
If you can't learn to love him
But, oh, what a beautiful thing when you sing
Hear all them bells ringing out in the street
Hammer strikes the metal and it makes me believe
Oh, hear all them bells ringing out in the street
Blue sky cracking and it makes me believe
'Cause if I don't believe in love
Then I don't believe in you
And I do
Now I'm not saying only bad news comes
For the people who want it
But you gotta play that music for who's listening
You got to have someone you wanna sing it to
Oh, what a beautiful thing when you sing
Hear all them bells ringing out in the street
Blue sky cracking and it makes me believe
Oh, hear all them bells ringing out in the street
Hammer strikes the metal and it makes me believe
'Cause if I don't believe in love
Then I don't believe in you
And I do
Close my eyes, see the glorious sunset
Through the windows of a store and I want it
Anyway, if I ever felt haunted
You were there for me
These angry people who are waiting to judge you
Have their own judgment that they'll have live up to
Open your mouth
And if nothing come through
Remember
You're the one that sings
And it's a gift
And life's a beautiful thing
Oh, don't waste it doll
You build a house and if the house comes up
You gotta work on that house
If you want to make it your home
'Cause everything inside that's not something you own
Is what you're taking with you
On the day that you go
And oh, what a beautiful world when we sing
Hear all them bells ringing out in the street
Hammer strikes the metal and it makes me believe
Oh, hear all them bells ringing out in the street
Hammer strikes the metal and it makes me believe
'Cause if I don't believe in love
Then I don't believe in you
And I do
I have two. Magic And Loss by Lou Reed is my theme song. The last 2 lines of the lyrics really hit home with me:
LOU REED - MAGIC AND LOSS
When you pass through the fire, you pass through humble
you pass through a maze of self doubt
When you pass through humble, the lights can blind you
some people never figure that out
You pass through arrogance, you pass through hurt
you pass through an ever present past
And it's best not to wait for luck to save you
pass through the fire to the light
Pass through the fire to the light
pass through the fire to the light
It's best not to wait for luck to save you
pass through the fire to the light
As you pass through the fire, your right hand waving
there are things you have to throw out
That caustic dread inside your head
will never help you out
You have to be very strong, 'cause you'll start from zero
over and over again
And as the smoke clears there's an all consuming fire
lying straight ahead
Lying straight ahead
lying straight ahead
As the smoke clears there's an all consuming fire
lying straight ahead
They say no one person can do it all
but you want to in your head
But you can't be Shakespeare and you can't be Joyce
so what is left instead
You're stuck with yourself and a rage that can hurt you
you have to start at the beginning again
And just this moment this wonderful fire
started up again
When you pass through humble, when you pass through sickly
when you pass through I'm better than you all
When you pass through anger and self deprecation
and have the strength to acknowledge it all
When the past makes you laugh and you can savor the magic
that let you survive your own war
You find that that fire is passion
and there's a door up ahead not a wall
As you pass through fire as you pass through fire
trying to remember its name
When you pass through fire licking at your lips
you cannot remain the same
And if the building's burning move towards that door
but don't put the flames out
There's a bit of magic in everything
and then some loss to even things out
Some loss to even things out
some loss to even things out
There's a bit of magic in everything
and then some loss to even things out
And of course People In Tha Middle by Spearhead. :)
SPEARHEAD - PEOPLE IN THA MIDDLE
I am not a Muslim but I read the final call
Because within its pages there is something for us all
And I am not professional but I love basketball
The squeaking of the sneakers they echo in the hall
But if I don’t have enemies I’m not doin’ my job
I might throw out a curve ball but I never throw a lob
People criticize me but I know it’s not the end
I try to kick the truth not just to make friends
(chorus)
But hey diddle diddle
To the people in tha middle
We got hot wax
And it cookin’ on the griddle
Got the guitar strummin’
The drummer drummin’
The people all hummin’
And the vibe was lovin’
On and on and on
’til the breakadawn
I am not a jerk although sometimes I act like one
And I am deadly serious about us havin’ fun
Well I go many places but I know I’m not with you
And I am not a sucker even though I’m stuck on you
Each one- should teach one and share with one anotha
So many is out there-that’s livin undercover
Your motha your fatha your sista your brotha
Your friends and their enemies all have their lovers
(chorus)
So tell me- the definition of a sell-out
Cast your first stone-but then get the hell out
People say they know me I can tell you that they don’t
People say they own me I can tell you that they won’t
The left and the right they all try to use me
But I’ll be in they faces before they can abuse me
So roll down ya window and listen what I’m sayin’
Relax ya mind and let the band keep playin’
On and on and on ’til the breakadawn
(chorus)
Cyndi Lauper / Girls Just Want To Have Fun
I come home in the morning light
My mother says when you gonna live your life right
Oh mother dear we're not the fortunate ones
And girls they want to have fun
Oh girls just want to have fun
The phone rings in the middle of the night
My father yells what you gonna do with your life
Oh daddy dear you know you're still number one
But girls they want to have fun
Oh girls just want to have -
That's all they really want
Some fun
When the working day is done
Girls - they want to have fun
Oh girls just want to have fun
Some boys take a beautiful girl
And hide her away from the rest of the world
I want to be the one to walk in the sun
Oh girls they want to have fun
Oh girls just want to have
That's all they really want
Some fun
When the working day is done
Girls - they want to have fun
Oh girls just want to have fun,
They want to have fun,
They want to have fun....
Not sure about a theme song, but "Something About England" and "Death or Glory" both by the Clash, always hit way too close to home. Probably some of the best lyrics, I've ever heard:
"Something About England"
They say immigrants steal the hubcaps
Of the respected gentlemen
They say it would be wine an' roses
If England were for Englishmen again
Well I saw a dirty overcoat
At the foot of the pillar of the road
Propped inside was an old man
Whom time would not erode
When the night was snapped by sirens
Those blue lights circled fast
The dancehall called for an' ambulance
The bars all closed up fast
My silence gazing at the ceiling
While roaming the single room
I thought the old man could help me
If he could explain the gloom
You really think it's all new
You really think about it too
The old man scoffed as he spoke to me
I'll tell you a thing or two
I missed the fourteen-eighteen war
But not the sorrow afterwards
With my father dead and my mother ran off
My brothers took the pay of hoods
The twenties turned the north was dead
The hunger strike came marching south
At the garden party not a word was said
The ladies lifted cake to their mouths
The next war began and my ship sailed
With battle orders writ in bed
In five long years of bullets and shells
We left tem million dead
The few returned to old Piccadily
We limped around Leicster Square
The world was busy rebuilding itself
The architects could not care
But how could we know when I was young
All the canges that were to come?
All the photos in the wallets on the battlefield
And now the terror of the scientific sun
There was masters an' servants an' servants an' dogs
They taught you how to touch your cap
But through strikes an' famine an' war an' peace
England never closed this gap
So leave me now the moon is up
But remember all the tales I tell
The memories that you have dredged up
Are on letters forwarded from hell
The streets were by now deserted
The gangs had trudged off home
The lights clicked off in the bedsits
An' old England was all alone
And ofcourse, these lines from "Death or Glory"
every gimmick hungry yob digging gold from rock 'n' roll
Grabs the mike to tell us he'll die before he's sold
But i believe in this-and it's been tested by research
That he who fucks nun will later join the church
From every dingy basement on every dingy street
I hear every dragging handclap over every dragging beat
That's just the beat of time-the beat that must go on
If you been trying for years-then we already heard your song
possibly "Four Hours in Washington" by M. Ward but I can't find the lyrics...
Nowhere Man - Beatles/Lennon
He's a real nowhere man
Sitting in his nowhere land
Making all his nowhere plans
For nobody
Nowhere man please listen
You don't know what you're missin'
Nowhere man, the world is at your command
anyone ever look back at what songs they relate to and think, wow, i'm really fucked up if i consider this my theme song? before anyone accuses me of backhandedly calling you all fucked up, that's not what i'm saying at all. i can think of several songs i'd pick and i could probably fill up a whole mix of songs that have lines or entire verses that i relate to. but then if i start to weed out the ones with aspects that don't really apply to me, i'm left with some pretty messed up shit. maybe it's just the nature of my personality, or maybe it's just the nature of the bulk of the music i like. it's like in high fidelity, and yeah i'm paraphrasing because i can't remember the exact quote, do we listen to sad pop music because we're depressed, or does listening to that stuff make us depressed? chicken or the egg.
Yep. Maybe not with the 2 songs I posted here (and which I feel are really close to me), but with some other I do think: Wow, that's kinda bleak to totally relate to it. :uhoh:
So is there any fucked-up club I can join?
:wink:
"Everyone Who Pretended to Like Me Is Gone" by The Walkmen
Because he knows
Our Romeo,
He can't climb back.
He swings in loopholes.
When he goes through the air
Their vengeance will stretch out.
I made the best of it.
I made the best of it.
I made the best of it.
This velvet rope
Has fell before
In vain.
Clothing crashing the floor.
Insane.
Worse than once thought.
I made the best of it.
I made the best of it.
I made the best of it.
I made the best of it.
I made the best of it. :sad:
[I have no idea what it means, but it's a cooooool song]
Theme from Shaft :bono:
I change all of the "SHAFTS" to my real name, and it's pure genius.
Mine is Gone by U2
Mine is too, sort of. I can certainly relate to most of the lyrics, and the song carries a lot of memories for me.
Acrobat is probably ultimately my theme song in that it's everything I've ever felt, really. Not just the lyrics, but the music...it's so intense. There is a real rage in that song, but there is hope too. Both Acrobat and Gone have this prevailing feeling of "it's not over yet, something is coming." I guess that's where I am in life right now... waiting for something to happen. Looking, even.
Another song that I can really relate to is "Nothing Gets Crossed Out" by Bright Eyes. Emo I know, but it fits. Conor Oberst is possibly my favourite lyricist ever.
Well, the future's got me worried, such awful thoughts
My head's a carousel of pictures
The spinning never stops
I just want someone to walk in front
And I'll follow the leader
Like when I fell under the weight of a schoolboy crush
Started carrying her books and doing lots of drugs
I almost forgot who I was, but came to my senses
Now I'm trying to be assertive, I'm making plans, want to rise to the occasion, yeah, meet all their demands
But all I do is just lay in bed and hide under the covers
Yeah, I know I should be brave
But I'm just too afraid of all this change
And it's hard to focus through all this doubt
I keep making this "To Do" list but nothing gets crossed out
Working on the record seems pointless now
When the world ends, who's gonna hear it?
Well I'm trying to take some comfort in written words
Yeah, Tim I heard your album and it's better than good
When you get off tour I think we should hang and black out together
'Cause I've been feeling sentimental for days gone by
All those summers singing, drinking, laughing, wasting our time
Remember all those songs and the way we smiled, in those basements made of music
But now I've got to crawl
To get anywhere at all
I'm not as strong as I thought
So when I'm lost in a crowd
I hope that you'll pick me out
Oh, how I, I long to be found
The grass grew high, I laid down
Now I, wait for a hand to lift me up, help me stand
I've been laying so low
Don't wanna lay here no more
Don't wanna lay here no more
Don't wanna lay here no more
Don't wanna lay here no more
No more...more...
But if everything that happens is supposed to be
And it's all predetermined, can't change your destiny
I guess I'll just keep moving, someday, maybe, I'll get to where I'm going
Popmartijin... I love the lyrics to Magic and Loss, I should get some Lou Reed stuff...I've got plenty of Velvet Underground :drool: , but nothing of Reed's solo career.
