Digital photography nerds!

Hey everyone, I just got a $500 gift card to Best Buy and I think it's time to get myself a camera!

I've been shopping around and the Canon Sure Shot G6 looks like my favorite so far. I will probably spend a bit more than the $500 so about $500-$700 is what I'm looking at. And as far as what I'm using it for, that includes everything really from everyday pics to my own personal amature photography.

If you have any recommendations or ideas thanks in advance.

My advice...not that it helps you...

Buy a cheaper camera and spend the rest on music.

Hi, Mr. Swallow.

If you already want to add a bit more money, then buy yourself a Canon Digital SLR. It's not that much more expensive, but an entirely different ballgame.

Re: Digital photography nerds!

I have the Sony DSC-T1 which is pretty badass - yeah, it's only 5MP but it's the size of a pack of cigarettes - and you will be able to bring it anywhere. . . shoots great movies too.

1) GET A CANON! No other brand will do.

2) Spend the extra few hundred and get a digital SLR or.....

3) I recommend the Canon PowerShot S1 IS (took this to Africa and LOVE it!!! BEAUTIFUL pics and the ones zoomed way in of the animals are perfectly in focus thanks to the image stabilizer). This camera is about $400, mine was $485 with a full 4 year warranty. Then you can spend a few hundred on some nice memory cards! Seriously though, this camera is amazing! I don't even really know how to use the thing and had it set on Auto the entire time and the pics are awesome. I love the photostitch feature as well (you can shoot 360 degree panoramas and turn them into interactive movie files where you drag the mouse in a direction and the screen rotates). It's only a 3.2 megapixel, but you can print 8.5x11" prints just fine. A higher resolution only means larger files = slower camera = more expensive memory. I also used the video function to just record things I wanted audio of (we saw a bunch of African dances and heard a bunch of choirs) so I'm ripping that to mp3 to make CDs. Even the audio sounds great.

Here's some examples of the photos:

Konica Minolta. It's two and change. Great camera. Walt Mossberg, a technology column writer in the Wall Street Journal who is very influential reccomends it. We love it.

You might want to consider the cost of extra memory card(s), a card reader, rechargable batteries and charger.
