Desert Island VI Album Game: Round 1, Match 8

Please vote for the playlist you LIKE THE MOST.

Welcome to the eighth and final match of the first round for Interference Desert Island VI! The premise of this game is that all of the Interferencers have been stranded on a desert island and we can only take up to 160 minutes of music with us (either as a continuous iPod playlist or two 80 minute CDs or any other format of our choosing). The object is to see which forum member can fit the most musical goodness into these 160 minutes.

For every win, each player will receive three points. If there is a tie, each player gets two points. If a player loses a match but is within three votes of the winner, that player will earn a single point.

At the beginning of each round, I will include the updated standings. Remember, the top two from each group moves on to the quarterfinals.

If you haven't listened to all the playlists, and you don't think you'll have time to get through them, I would urge everyone to at least review how each playlist is structured and, if possible, to check out the sequencing and flow of the songs. I'd also take the time to listen to a song by an artist you are unfamiliar with, or any song by an artist you usually dislike, as sometimes you may hear something you never thought you would have from that artist.

Mr. V came up big in the fifth match, defeating impy13, 13-3.

The final match of the first round features two rookies, Joey788 and onebloodonelife. Below are their playlists.

STUCK IN TWILIGHT

Since this is my first playlist and I came up with it in between writing papers for the end of the semester, I don’t really have a cover or well-thought out story to go with the playlist. I decided that I wanted two contrasting CDs more in terms of how they feel than anything else. So I separated them into a day CD and a night CD. The day CD seems to have more of an energetic feel that lasts until the last song, “Daddy’s Gone.” I see this song as being a good transition into the beginning of dusk. The night CD starts off with all the pleasure and temptation the night brings. The second half of the disc slows down to show the result of recklessly giving in to those desires. There are some well-known and some lesser-known bands in the playlist and hopefully there’s something for everyone. I hope you enjoy the songs I chose as well as how it flows.

A Journey, Not a Destination

I had a loose narrative in my mind as I was making this list: basically, a person is moving through life, and we're looking in as this person falls in and out of love. Then, after a period of discouragement, finds him/herself ready and willing to love again. Listen with that in mind, if you choose. Mostly though, it's simply a collection of songs that I adore. Enjoy!

1. Cee-Lo - "The Art of Noise" - Cee-Lo Green...is the Soul Machine (3:46)
2. Yeasayer - "Sunrise" - All Hour Cymbals (4:07)
3. Atmosphere - "Sunshine" - Sad Clown Bad Summer IX EP (3:37)
4. Wavves - "So Bored" - Wavvves (3:14)
5. Ben Harper - "Get It Like You Like It" - Both Sides of the Gun (3:28)
6. N.E.R.D. - "She Wants to Move" - Fly or Die (3:34)
7. Girl Talk - "Hold Up" - Night Ripper (2:51)
8. Akron/Family - "Everyone is Guilty" - Everyone is Guilty 7" single (5:58)
9. Animal Collective - "Summertime Clothes" - Merriweather Post Pavilion (4:28)
10. Fleet Foxes - "Mykonos" - Sun Giant EP (4:35)
11. Sebadoh - "Soul and Fire" - Bubble & Scrape (3:47)
12. Bon Iver - "Wisconsin" - For Emma single (5:26)
13. Ryan Adams - "Fuck the Universe" - Love is Hell (7:31)
14. Radiohead - "Packt Like Sardines in a Crushd Tin Box" - Amnesiac (4:00)
15. Madlib - "Slim's Return" - Shades of Blue (3:56)
16. Madvillain - "ALL CAPS" - Madvillainy (2:11)
17. DJ Shadow - "Organ Donor" - Endtroducing (1:57)

I had a tough time with OBOL's entry. A few songs I liked but mostly stuff I couldn't get into.

I liked Joey788's list. It's probably pretty easy to figure out why, just by looking at the set.

My thoughts echo yours. While I do like quite a bit on it, I was hoping her love of post-rock would come into play more.

Overall, I preferred Joey's list, despite a couple of clunkers in my mind, like Sex Type Thing.

Both are fair comments. I came in expecting some resistance to my list, especially with the large amount of hip-hop on it. My musical tastes have shifted quite a bit lately, and I still love post-rock, but it's a much smaller part of my listening now. Plus, looking over the lists, it seems like most people have some kind of post-rock on it, so I'm not that torn up about leaving the genre off of mine.

Whatever your list lacks in post-rock, mine undoubtedly compensates.

Yeah, hip-hop is the dealbreaker for some people, it seems like.

this was extremely hard for me. I really loved both lists...two of my favourites. joey's had some amazing songs that I love. I voted for onebloodonelife partially because it was different, and I appreciate that. And I discovered a lot of music I hadn't heard before from it, and I liked pretty much all of it

By far our closest match to this point, with a little over an hour to go.

I'm voting for Cassie's list, I really did love that it was different and it was interesting to hear the hip hop. Joey had a great listen, problem was I was just sick to death of most of the those songs

Same here, but you can't teach an old dog to change its spots, you know? Or something like that.
