The Desert Island VI tournament will be run in a manner similar to the World Cup. There are five groups, with five players in each group (as outlined below). Each player will have a match against every opponent in his/her group. Once these rounds are complete, the two players with the most points in each group moves on to the quarterfinals. If there is a tie in points, whoever wins the tiebreaker moves on (tiebreakers explained in detail further down).

Groups were determined by several factors. The top four players from Desert Island V (LemonMelon, hardyharhar, phillyfan26, phanan) were automatically separated. Additional breakdowns were calculated by the remaining quarterfinalists from the last game, historical performance, number of championships won, and veterans of the game vs. newer contestants. Every effort has been made to bring together players who haven't been in the same group previously, but due to the limitations set forth from the factors used, this goal was not fully reached.

For each match, the objective is to win more votes than your opponent. For every win, each player will receive three points. If there is a tie, each player gets two points. If a player loses a match but is within three votes of the winner, that player will earn a single point.

It's important to remember that every vote counts. Even if someone is way ahead in a match, you should still vote for the playlist you think is better. This is very important becaue the vote differential sometimes comes into play with tiebreakers.

Once all the preliminary rounds are completed, the top two from each group move on. However, if two players have the same amount of points, we use the following tiebreaker system:

-The player with the better overall record wins
-If overall records are the same, the player with the better vote differential wins
-If the vote differential is the same, a one match playoff will be done

The tournament is tentatively scheduled to begin sometime in the next few weeks. Updates will be posted here and on the Desert Island site.

To Mykonos

This playlist doesn't really have much of a theme, at least not a linear one in any sense. It's more a series of songs to do with the idea of trying to escape from somewhere and realising that nowhere is perfect not even where you dream of going. The playlist is divided into three acts but you can listen to it as a whole if you wish; the parts just represent the different moods of the playlist. I made the playlist with a crossfade on of about 4-6 seconds so that's how I imagined the flow sounding, so that's probably the optimal way to listen to it.

Where Life Begins

With this playlist, my intentions were to delve into the essence of being, and death of the soul involved with celebrity. The music follows suit, telling a loose story about a mouse named Richard who saves his kingdom from the evil Fire Witch and becomes a hero, but his fame destroys him. This is told quite directly in track 1. During track 2, he becomes nearly homicidal due to his own hatred of mankind and brooding sadness. In track 3 he goes off into a psychedelic dreamworld to find the source of life and death itself. Track 4 is a surreal combination of thought and substance that never quite blossoms into something more. Yet this is beautiful. Axver helped me discover new genres and musical avenues during the making of this list, which caused me to admit the error of my sycophantic, commercial ways, so it may be slightly different than what you're used to hearing from me. But, rest assured, it's a sensory experience that is atmospheric, thrilling, and enlightening all at once.

Because the artists I chose to use on this playlist are slightly obscure, I would like to give you a quick summary of each one. Monolithic Eyeball Of The Silmarillion is a progressive rock group from Phoenix, Arizona. Their music channels classic rock, folk, and general avant-garde noodling in a manner that sweeps the listener away with a distinctly southwestern flavor. They were in consideration for the Guinness Book Of World Records for performing the longest song of all time at a gig in their hometown, but no one was there to see it. Octavium is a death metal band from Birmingham, England that Axver was particularly keen on. I'm not sure what the big deal is, but I liked the segue. I am more favorable towards Ue˜Ú, a Pitchfork-heralded Icelandic post-rock group that was said to have opened for Bjork at a school dance in 1978. Not much else about them is known, and they never talk loudly/clearly enough to be understood. But this is assuredly the source of their genius. Intransigent Rubber Accordions is an experimental garage rock collective from Brooklyn, NY that got started in 1966. Their claim to fame is having Andy Warhol cover his face with his hand after walking past them on the street one afternoon in 1967, and threatening a journalist who referred to them as "The Intransigent Rubber Accordions" with glass dildo crime. All of their recorded output is featured on the 2006 compilation Complete Intransigence, which consists of one 42-minute track from a dubiously-titled DAT tape discovered at the bottom of a whorehouse incinerator in 1987.

PROLOGUE

I am a rodent. Not one of great importance, though we rarely aspire to such great heights. Eating out of the trash and observing man do as they please, filthy wretches they are...They think I want cheese, but I want love. The love of a woman. Orgasm. Melanathia is my home. It is beautiful. As beautiful as life can be. It floats in the sky, or so it feels to me. We live in pure moisture; the clouds. Storms rumble below us, so we do not feel them. But they're there. Man is the creator of death and disenchantment. But they don't believe me. I don't believe me. Who am I?

CHAPTER 1 - Incendiary Meetings

In my apathetic delirium I once propped my head up and saw a strangely-shaped cloud. It wasn't of anvil or penis. Neither cheese, nor was it cirrus. No, it was black. Black as rain. Black as my wretched soul. But no one noticed; they said it was a rain cloud. And it was, actually. But then another cloud appeared and this time it was DOOM. The Fire Witch from northern Firetithia came to destroy us all and wipe the slate clean. At the time, I figured it was a horrible thing for her to do. Nay, a WRETCHED thing. But what could I do? I was but a simple mouse. She brought her armies toward us. We believed in peace and love. We were fools. She easily defeated us and wiped us away, excepting a remnant. They banned together and became the Dissenters. A group of brave men (not many women, however; those were different times) that would stop at nothing to defeat the Fire Witch and her evil army. They were set to battle on the Ice Caps of northern Melanathia. However, that day was of particularly great warmth and, arriving early, the Dissenters were washed away and promptly died instantly. Hearing about this, my heroic instincts instantly kicked in. Not knowing about vodka or Bailey's at the time, I rushed to their aid without thought. Running through the barren shopping center, now filled with soot, skeletons, and foreskins, I avoided the men who, for reasons I did not know at the time, were trying to kill me. I thought they meant well. Bastards. I entered the palace of the Fire Witch through a crack in the door and entered a room filled with swords, machetes, maces, and this clear liquid that I did not know the name of at the time. I drank some in my thirst, grabbed a sword and a mace and went out into the hall. There, some ogres were waiting for me, and an epic battle with them and the Knights Of Firetithia ensued.

CHAPTER 2 - Inquisitive Actions Bereave

Somehow, possibly due to the liquid I drank earlier, I wasted them all quite easily. From that day forward, I dubbed this liquid "Powerjuice", because the juice gave me great power. From there, I walked up the stairs, only to find that the door was locked. So, after waiting a while for someone to open it for me, I got annoyed at sat the container next the door, which opened instantly, likely out of fear. Inside was a room with a piece of paper inside that told the secret weakness of the Fire Witch. To no surprise to me or anyone else, it was water.

CHAPTER 3 - The End Justifies The Means

Then, behind me, appeared the Fire Witch. She was wearing a bikini, which would ordinarily be a turn-on, but she was about 200 years old, so it was just really distracting. In her anger and shock that her secret was found out, she attempted to set the paper on fire, which made no sense because I already knew what was on it. Then, right when she had her back turned, I chugged some Powerjuice and gave her a roundhouse kick to the face, which sent her flying through the solid concrete walls and into a telephone pole. She was sent to a hospital and made a full recovery, but my victory was glorious, and the town awarded me with a golden shuttlecock that I make use of to this very day.

CHAPTER 4 - Taking Pleasure In Baubles Of The Most Materialistic Sort

That day, the crowds were all around me. It was a glorious and incredibly dark circus. Like a circus filled with clowns that only Stephen King could dream up in his most homicidal epiphanies. I was regaled with harps and flutes, the likes of which I had never heard before. They weren't particularly enjoyable to me, but I appreciated the effort, fool that I was. During this time, I found a fellow mouse that I felt I could settle down with, possibly with thoughts of partaking in the soul-sucking, masculinity-destroying ritual known as marriage. We did partake of this and had several offspring, all of which were horrible disappointments to me. I spent my days cowering in the corner of our basement, shivering in the cold deadness of being, knowing that if I were to do otherwise, the vultures would surround me with pens and pieces of paper that they wished for me to write on. Those were dark days. I spent much time reading about humans and wondering why they were so cruel and hateful to one another, and why they worshiped their wallet as they did, to the detriment of those around them. I loathed mankind, and myself for being amongst them. I learned much during this time and have never turned back. Men are animals. And now that you know my story, I will share with you an epic poem that I wrote during this period of my life.

CHAPTER 5 - The Sound Of Silence

At one time I was young
Without even a care
Now, not even the people I know
Can save me from my lonely despair

In my room
I clutch to The Dreaming
It shields me from
My heart's daily reaming

6'2"
My posture is sagging
Shadows jump by
And I take the stabbing

God walks by, puzzled by my indifference
I am not emo
I am nihilistic
There is a difference

A man from Seattle
Encourages knife-related violence
When I cry in my room
This is the sound of silence

CHAPTER 6 - Basidiomycota Mindexpandica

One morning, as I was about to enter my best friend Vance's maternal figure, the oldest groupie working at Native Cock's, a brothel owned by a man who went by Chief Dalton (A homeless ex-McDonald's frycook who dressed as a Native America, likely to gain the pity of uninformed passersby. He wielded a cane and a rusty, semen-encrusted spatula that he used during his time at McDonald's; it took a long time for management to get wise), I heard a rapping at my front door. My penis having just been to hell and back, I put on my robe and walked to the door. A gnome appeared, apparently a fan. Before I had time to retrieve my halberd, he walked in the door, and I thought of only the ugliest things. He sat down on my sofa, feet shuffling, and set a basket covered with a cloth on the table next to him. With halberd now in hand, I somehow gathered the kindness to ask him who he was and what he wanted with me. It wasn't the least I could do by any means; as a matter of fact, it was quite charitable. Perhaps I did need a lady in my life after all..well, never mind, Vance's mom doesn't count. Anyway, he told me that he was indeed a fan, but not of my knack for murdering witches, but of the my writing; something that had been extolled on one of those newfangled webpage things. I think it was an online newsletter about farm equipment or something. Anyway, he brought good tidings, and suggested that I look to psychedelic substances in order to come out of my brooding sadness. I told him to go fuck thyself and he left, leaving his basket behind him. It was filled with mushrooms blue, green, and orange in color. I planned to use them as part of my dinner later; it's his own fault for leaving them behind, I figured. Using my bamboo-handled skillet, I fried them, which caused the mushrooms to glow fluorescently. At first, I thought it was caused naturally by the heat, but then the door drove by in a convertible and waved at me. As I stood there, breathing in the fumes with mouth agape, my mind seemed to create a world of its own, free from joy, humanity, and color. Truly glorious. Just then, I realized what I had to do; I had to travel deep into my consciousness and find the center of life and death itself. I took a bite of the mushroom and my journey began.

CHAPTER 7 - A Particularly Trite Instance Of Cerebral Augmentation

My mind. It was filled with...colors. But yet...they were dulled. I knew this new fantasy I had concocted was not truly perfect. Nor was I. Because I created it. But I dared not think, because every time I did the walls began to cave in. Yes, there were walls. Not sure why there were walls...I just suck, I guess. It was all very cocoon-esque, though far more perilous, but the hope of personal discovery was there, I felt. Of course, I was high on shrooms at the time, so whatever. On my way to find the center of life itself, I found out what the meaning of life was. It was this small room filled with these nerdy-looking men(?) who were discussing The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy. I've always hated that movie. The light was growing brighter. It was a halo of transcendence that no one man could comprehend. I felt lonely. It was quiet. Yet I was not really alone, for I was near life. Life itself.

CHAPTER 8 - Awakening

I then awoke because my landlord jabbed me with a broom. Bastard. I never did get to discuss things with the center of life itself, but I can only assume that he knew more than I did about...life. Then, after picking up Vance's mom, who I found lying in a pile of hypodermic needles, and bringing her back to the alley from whence she came, I made some tea, sat down, and contemplated for a very long time. About what I have no idea.

EPILOGUE

Anyway, the point of all this is that mankind is an abstract concept created by the sea to decide the destiny of the ocean and its adjacent rivers. We are nothing. Not even I, the greatest hero of the 20th (and, thanks to the indietastic webpages that discuss my brilliant writing, 21st) century. Beauty, creativity, and the construction of friendships are simply ways of using up time, air, and precious nutrients. This is proven true by the music man creates. Who cares about it, really? Life is merely hope deferred, and our despicable desires are seldom fulfilled. Then again, I spend my days running in place on a wheel and stroking a golden shuttlecock, so what don't take my word for it.

Uncertain Paths

I guess every playlist is a reflection of one’s own self, so I won’t deny this one has a bit (or a lot) of myself in it. I won’t dwelve into details, as I would like to leave this open for interpretation, but the main topic here is transition into adulthood, the uncertain paths we have to choose, the dilemmas and doubts it generates. It is not all gloomy, but rather a contrast of emotions, from joy to desperation to hope for a happy ending. Concept or no concept, the playlist also has some of my favorite songs, which I hope you will enjoy. Thanks for listening!

Since I’m Mr Literal, I approach this as if I’m actually gonna end up on an island. So I gotta have songs I’m gonna like listening to on my solar or wind powered boombox. And being old enough to remember the 60’s, I have to have songs from way back then also. So I think I got a pretty good mix of tunes I’ve enjoyed since then. There’s a handful of songs from previous DI and mini contest lists I’ve included which I never would have heard otherwise, but really like now. So thanks to all the participants for turning me on to some great songs. You’ll know who you are by checking the info on each song. I’m looking forward to hearing some new stuff once again that will become part of my being from here on. Hopefully there’s something here that someone else will enjoy. I’ve tried to select songs from the older artists that are not commonly heard (but will no doubt still be familiar), and still be fun listening. I think it moves along pretty well, and I even became kinda reflective in the second half. I was gonna end on U2, but I had to include the Neil Young song I’d just discovered and love. I thought it worked well as the last song anyways and it had to go there because it’s live (gasp!) and there’s a minute of applause at the end of it. We’ll just pretend everyone is applauding cuz the list was so good (haha) or just cuz it’s finally over. Well……………………. I hope you enjoy it.

COLOURS

This is probably as close to an autobiographical playlist as I'll get. This just sounds like my life at the moment. While there is a common theme or two, there's no story you need to follow or anything. The songs were chosen because of either their lyrical relevance, personal meaning, or contribution to the overall tone of the playlist.

There is a lot of different music here, with genres like pop, rock, shoegaze, indie, alternative, electronica, Britpop, piano rock, post-punk, experimental, neo-psychedelia and synthpop. With this in mind I have tried to make the transitions between these as seamless as possible - and indeed, in some instances, two songs almost become one, which is very pleasing.

I have no idea what the cover art is, but I did it one night when I was in an altered state and it just fitted with the music perfectly, so I'm sticking with it.

What I can say is that I love all the music on here. I thoroughly enjoyed putting this playlist together, and I hope you get something out of it, or at the very least, enjoy listening to it.

Play From Your Fucking Heart

“The world is like a ride at an amusement park, and when you choose to go on it, you think that it’s real because that’s how powerful our minds are. And the ride goes up and down and around and around, it has thrills and chills, and it’s very brightly colored, and it’s very loud, and it’s fun … for a while. But some people have been on the ride for a long time, and they begin to question: ‘Is this real, or is this just a ride?’ And other people have remembered, and they come back to us. They say, ‘Hey! Don’t worry. Don’t be afraid, ever, because, this is just a ride.’ And we … kill those people! But it doesn’t matter, because it’s just a ride. And we can change it anytime we want. It’s only a choice: no effort, no work, no job, no savings and money. A choice. Right now. Between fear and love. The eyes of fear want you to put bigger locks on your doors, buy guns, close yourselves off. The eyes of love, instead, see all of us as one. Here’s what you can do to change the world, right now, to a better ride: take all that money we spend on weapons and defense each year, and instead, spend it feeding, clothing, and educating the poor of the world, which it would many times over, not one human being excluded, and we could explore space, together, both inner and outer, forever, in peace.” – Bill Hicks

I really don't have much to say about this list. Listening to it makes me extremely happy, that's for sure. I tried not to let current events in my life taint it too much, but, well, that's just not entirely possible, as, I find with music, you listen to the music that fits the mood your in. STUCK IN TWILIGHT

Since this is my first playlist and I came up with it in between writing papers for the end of the semester, I don’t really have a cover or well-thought out story to go with the playlist. I decided that I wanted two contrasting CDs more in terms of how they feel than anything else. So I separated them into a day CD and a night CD. The day CD seems to have more of an energetic feel that lasts until the last song, “Daddy’s Gone.” I see this song as being a good transition into the beginning of dusk. The night CD starts off with all the pleasure and temptation the night brings. The second half of the disc slows down to show the result of recklessly giving in to those desires. There are some well-known and some lesser-known bands in the playlist and hopefully there’s something for everyone. I hope you enjoy the songs I chose as well as how it flows.

A Journey, Not a Destination

I had a loose narrative in my mind as I was making this list: basically, a person is moving through life, and we're looking in as this person falls in and out of love. I really like the look of Irishteen's at first glance.

And there's no way in hell I'm reading all that shlock LMel wrote, but he's clearly a clown regardless.

So hopefully everyone is ok with the groups. I think it's as fair as it can get.

I plan on having the website updated at some point tomorrow with all of the links posted.

i'm disappointed by the lack of kheen round, but otherwise  i'm looking forward to getting my ass handed to me in that first round. and rounds two, four, and five tbh.

 This all looks awesome! Can't wait to go have my list go up against Axver's, since they're so different, should be an interesting match-up for sure. Also a whole lot of post-rock going on in group 4, I dig it though because I'm a post-rock nerd.

 to GAF for getting a Mendelssohn piece in there and using the same Replcements song as I did. "I Will Dare" is such a great song of theirs!

I think the complete LACK of post-rock on my list is made up for by Ax's, so yeah, you're right

Hardy and I both used a song from The Correct Use of Soap! Since mine ends up as an aimless mess, I look forward to seeing him beat me. :)

But the winner seems pretty clear to me:

KhanadaRhodes

2. Toto - "Africa" - Toto IV (4:56)

Sometimes, one song is all that it takes. That is the song.

I think that I love all of you. Let's have fun with this thing. Maybe reminiscent of a Kobe jump shot in tonight's game. Excuse me, i'm sorry, i forgot, i'm sorry.

I can't wait to listen to phanan's list. I'm impressed somebody else has used Sleepmakeswaves and Laura - and not all too surprised it was him.

I should have known you'd have used them, too.

Yeah, you'll probably enjoy the second half of my playlist more than the first. I'll be curious to hear what you think of Ocoai, if you've never heard of them. They remind me of Pelican somewhat.

Yea Phanan! This is always exciting at the start.

Hardy and I both used a song from The Correct Use of Soap!
 Haha, Floorboards could have easily ended up on my list, I love that whole album. And Wire :hyper:

As a matter of fact, I can't believe how many songs I almost used or were on my original list, are on other lists.

Since mine ends up as an aimless mess, I look forward to seeing him beat me. :)
I see what your doing here :yikes: I'm keeping my eyes on you

But the winner seems pretty clear to me:

Africa rules. And I don't like Toto :)

These lists are great. Looking forward to hearing them. We've heard a few already. Sorry I can't do a running diary, but I don't listen to these at the computer. And time is precious these days.

Good job everyone :applaud:

This is only the second one of these that I've done but I think it's safe to say that Bonnie wins the prize for greatest cover art in the history of Interference Desert Island.

Have the download links been sent to everybody? I didn't get them (I only got the playlists from people that sent them to me directly).

Btw, this looks

Usually, the download links can be found on the Desert Island webpage (found in Phanan's signature).

Lists look stellar, can't wait to start.

Groups look awesome, too, Phanan. At least until I lose.

I keed.
