Please vote for the tracklisting you LIKE THE MOST.

Welcome to the fifth qualifying round of the Interference Desert Island Game II! The premise of this game is that all of the Interferencers have been stranded on a desert island and we can only take up to 160 minutes of music with us (either as a continuous iPod playlist or two 80 minute CDs or any other format of our choosing). The object is to see which forum member can fit the most musical goodness into these 160 minutes.

The fourth round followed in the footsteps of the third in being a close-fought affair, but just avoided being a draw. Lara Mullen defeated KhanadaRhodes 22-20, and this would have been even closer at 22-21 had I not spent so long deliberating that I just missed the deadline to vote! Let this be a lesson to all of you! Polls are open for 2 days.

The fifth round shall see inmyplace13 and Lancemc's tracklistings clash. Below, you will find their tracklistings. If you are unfamiliar with the songs included, we can help you hear them! Just leave your e-mail address. :)

Reminder for contestants: if there was an error on your tracklisting on the master list thread, let me know before your qualifying round so I can post the correct tracklist!

THE TRACKLISTINGS!

inmyplace13 writes: I tried to separate my playlist into three distinct phases, each beginning with an epic post rock track and ending with one of my favorite piano driven tunes. I always think the best playlists start out with the hypnotic drumbeat of The Beatles’ “Tomorrow Never Knows,” which I unfortunately used in the last competition. Fortunately, the Love record came out, and you get to “turn off your mind” to begin my playlist once again. I didn’t seek to make this a comprehensive list of the best songs ever or to span every conceivable genre. I simply wanted to make a list that reflects what I’m listening to these days and the point I’m at in my life. I hope you enjoy it and find something new and worthwhile.

Lancemc writes: My playlist was originally envisioned as a showcase for the beauty of music. It included the entirety of Beethoven's 5th Symphony spread out throughout the playlist. It opened with Beck's Sexx Laws, and followed with the first two movements. It was funny. The third movement divided the playlist in half, and the final movement closed the playlist, with R.E.M.'s "Find the River" as a sort of Coda at the very end. I thought it was beautiful, and probably a more cohesive playlist than what I'm currently offering. It worked well as a solid unit. But the problem was that I could only fit in like 25 other songs. I needed more. That and the fact that a lot of people probably wouldn't appreciate 50 minutes of classical music, and that would probably hurt my chances in the competition. So I scratched the idea, and started anew. This time I just tried to fit in as many songs I could from my favorite artists. The songs I selected aren't necessarily my favorite song from each individual artist, but I feel they represent everything I love about each artist as a whole (also keeping in mind the time constraints, which limited my choices a bit). Then I did my best to make a listenable 160 minute playlist out of all this junk. Not a whole lot changed as far order goes once I had my artists in line. Specific songs continued to switch in and out during the whole process though. And a few quick deadline decisions were made just hours before I finalized the playlist (including swapping R.E.M's "I Believe" for "Electrolite", Bob Dylan's "Simple Twist of Fate" for "Shelter From the Storm", Pink Floyd's "Sheep" for "Time", and the very late addition of a Wilco track). Overall, I think this current incarnation is the best my playlist has ever sounded, though I could probably continue to tweak it forever. Why is my playlist the best? Well, I tried to keep it accessible, with some of the most beautiful song's I've ever known. I let a few odd balls in, like the Sugarcubes and Brian Eno tracks, but they're good for depth. And I couldn't possibly think of a better way to end such an epic musical journey than with The Boss's most beautiful song, "New York City Serenade". So sit back, relax, enjoy the rockers when they come, and enjoy my music.

Competition master list.

Competition rules.

We will soon have a diagram of the competition's format, made by either myself or Screwtape.

Have fun!

This one was an easier choice for me than the previous round, but only slightly easier.

Lancemc has more songs I love, but inmyplace13 gets kudos for the Rolling Stones, Flaming Lips, U2 and Beatles selections.

Had to go with Lancemc.

Now we've got tracklistings that are a bit more appealling to me than the last two rounds, hurrah!

Lance has less stuff that I really dislike, but the stuff IMP has that I like, I really really like and some of his tracklisting has a superb atmosphere and flow.

Damnit, why are all the rounds so tough this time around? The only time I had an easy choice was in my own round.

 Wow...hmm...

I shall take Lance's awesome set, if only for the I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself mention.

Man. If we had just started this contest now, my list would already be so different. :( Just shows how persistently changing my tastes are.

The only problem I have with IMPy's is that a lot of it is relatively recent, but quality is quality whenever it's been released you know?

it could be somewhat of a factor in my voting, if that's specific enough for you.

I think you should have stuck with Sexx Laws. Debra made the cut on mine, but you all won't get to see it for a while. :sigh:

I really debated for a loooong time which Beck song I wanted on here. Ultimately I went with The Golden Age for two reasons.

1. It's my favorite Beck song.

2. My original playlist lacked slower-tempo songs in the first third, so I started swapping out certain songs to create a more comfortable pacing.

The reason I would argue for Sexx Laws is that it would sound absolutely brilliant before 5:15, whereas Golden Age seems a bit awkward to me. Not that I can truly argue with Golden Age, since it's a wonderful, wonderful song.

True. But Sexx Laws wasn't before 5:15 on my original list. It was before the first movement of Beethoven's 5th symphony. Now THAT sounded brilliant. Hah.

Hell, I'd still change a few songs on mine right now too.

Changing musical tastes

:lmao:

When The Levee Breaks--->The Messiah oratorio

Both playlists were excellent.

This was tough because Lancemc had the better songs in my opinion while IMP's playlist left an impression with its atmosphere and mood. I went with IMP because it felt like a great album. It was something unique and different. That said, Lancemc's playlist was fantastic and is as deserving of a berth as any of the winners in the heats in my opinion. Great job to both of you and good luck!

Got to go with Lancemc's this time. Both tracklists were definitely good, but when it comes down to it Lance's tracklist had more of what I've been listening to lately (ENO AND BOWIE AND TALKING HEADS AND AHH).

Once again though, both were REALLY good, and are probably my two favorites of the competition so far.

And it looks like it's only going to get better next round.

Have been thinking over this one all day. There's a some stuff on both lists I'm not really fond of at all but both of them have some really quality tunes too. Imp has the great Ryan Adams, Outkast, Ray LaMontagne, Arcade Fire and Bob Dylan but then Lance has Debaser, Sufjan and The White Stripes which I also love.

This round is the toughest one yet

When listening to my playlist, listen to 17-22 (Outkast through to Death Cab) as if it's a story. I meant to include that in my paragraph.

I carefully picked each of those songs in that particular order to tell a complete story of the curve of a relationship.

Damn, these are hard!

My initial inclination is toward LMC, but IMP has much better Rolling Stones ("Gimme Shelter" my favorite RS!) and "Slug","Theologians", Sigur Ros and TV ON THE RADIO!! TV ON THE RADIO!!! :combust:

But then that's all pitted against my all time favorite U2. And then tack on brilliant Bruce "NYC Seranade" and "The Golden Age" OH! "The Golden Age", a much, much better Arcade Fire selection, and I think the tie-breaker "When The Leavee Breaks" :combust:

I'm sorry, IMP, but I think I gotta go with LMC on this one.

Damn, these are hard!

I must admit. For a short while I actually considered voting for IMP's list. It's so good.

Ultimately, I had to go for IMP. Everyone here knows I'm a sucker for anything with good flow and atmosphere ... and Sluuuug.

Whoever loses this is winning the other bracket, I'm sure of it.

This is tough for me, but I'm going with IMP's
