Depeche Mode Appreciation Thread

ah another truly underrated and great band

though they seemed to prosper more on their singles rather than their albums

theres been many people who are willing to compare this band to U2, Nine Inch Nails, New Order etc, but whatever it is, its remarkable that they are still around

especially given the fact they relied on making singles, and the fact they stuck to their guns of making synthesizers rather than the traditional guitar, drums method to conjuer rock music.

theyve had many incidences over their history as well, what with vince clarke walking out on them earlier on because he couldnt handle the fame, dave gahan and his drug addictions, and alan wilder leaving in order to restore the disunity that threatened to eat up the band during that tough "Songs of Faith and Devotion" period.

anyway for them to last all this time, they must be doing something right

I voted for Personal Jesus although I really couldn't make a choice. I've loved Depeche Mode for many years and all their songs to me are great.

You are right, they truly are an underrated group. Exciter is a great album.

Love Depeche Mode.

Oh wow, what a hard poll! I love them all!

DM is my 3rd fave band, after U2 and the Stones...though sometimes I think they actually might be 2nd. If I didn't have U2 CD's, DM would be the band I have the most CD's of. They rock!

*thinks maybe ATYCLB will take a break from the CD player on the way to work...must listen to DM now!!!!!!!*

"Sweetest Perfection" is my favourite.

I almost picked "Everything Counts," but I like the live version of that song more than the album version.

I have a friend who is completely obsessed with Depeche Mode like I am with U2 -- when I stayed with her over New Year's, we watched the Depeche Mode DVD then the U2 marathon thing on Direct TV.

(edited because my typing is still screwed up because of Guy Garvey mania)

Agreed! I would have voted for "other" as a result of this, but I was swayed by Walking in My Shoes. But Condemnation really is my favorite.

I like so many of the songs in the poll, but I had to go with "Blasphemous Rumors." What a unique song with such ballsy lyrics (I think that God's got a sick sense of humor / And when I die I expect to find him laughing). This song of DM's has always stuck in my head as a treasure.

Still, that's not to take away from their other great songs.

darn i left out 2 tracks

Behind the Wheel
and Never Let Me Down Again

the best thing about DM is their lyrics, Martin Gore is a genius for writing great lyrics to his funky electronic beats and not many seem to surpass

hmm i havent included any tracks from the new album Exciter

but When The Body Speaks
and Goodnight Lovers are the album's standout tracks

the only shortcoming of DM the last album is they've seem to have gotten a bit mellow. The rocking tracks dont stand out as much as the ballads

Ok, wtf? I just had to log in? It was saying I was unregistered.

Anyways, LOVE DM. Saw them last in in concert and they kicked ass. Dave Gahan=

I think that my favourites are Freestate and Dream On. I only have Violator, Ultra and Exciter, though. I would like to get some of their other stuff. Does anyone have suggestions as to what albums would be good to get next??

Ah they have so many great songs. Personal Jesus, Enjoy the Silence, Barrel of a Gun, People are People, Dream On, Everything Counts, Question Of Time... I could go on and on. An excellent band indeed.
