The first pop record to mix symphonic music and straight rock n roll, and it's a classic. You all would know it best for Tuesday Afternoon and Nights In White Satin, but it's so, so much more. The lyrics are childlike and affecting:

Time seems to stand quite still
In a child's world, it always will

I'm looking at myself
Reflections of my mind
It's just the kind of day
To leave myself behind
So gently swaying
Through the fairy-land of love
If you'll just come with me
And see the beauty of
Tuesday afternoon

And of course there's also some hippie-ish wankery (that also happens to work well):

Breathe deep the gathering gloom
Watch lights fade from every room
Bedsitter people look back and lament
Another day's useless energy spent

Impassioned lovers wrestle as one
Lonely man cries for love and has none
New mother picks up and suckles her son
Senior citizens wish they were young

This record is probably the most effective nostalgia record of all time, next to Village Green Preservation Society, which is another classic for another thread.

The Moody Blues are one of those great bands that no one talks about. This album is amazing but To Our Children's Children's Children is thier true classic.

DOFP is some kick-ass shizzle-nizzle!

Saw their Red Rocks concert on PBS probably a decade ago & it got me hooked. I don't listen to them often, but they're still great stuff.

The Moodies were my favorite band growing up in the 1970s, and they were actually much better before they broke up in 1972. DOFP is amazing, especially for the time period. The first 7 albums should be in everyone's collections. They still put on a hell of a live show for guys in their 60s!
