sorry, such blasphemous comments aren't allowed here!

although.... my roommate (who's an idiot) would agree with you.

Anyway... covers that are better huh?

Jimi - All Along The Watchtower
Annie Lennox - A Whiter Shade Of Pale :reject:

can't think of anything else right now...

There's a wisdom in the lyrics to One when they come from JC, that Bono just didn't have in 91. I think he steals it from them. No disrespect to U2, just more respect to JC.

Without You- Harry Nilsson

The guy had a 3 1/2 octave voice. How could it not be better?

Well to prove physical tallent means nothin, Mariah Carey destroyed this fine tune in the 90's.

I've heard the JC version of One, and I was unimpressed. The sense of yearning, desperation and warmth in Bono's vocal really cannot be topped, not even by the great Johnny Cash.

I do think Hurt is done much better by Cash.

Cash is a favorite of mine. i have the Unearthed box set, which has heart of gold on it. i know its a hugely covered song but Cash's voice really brings out the life in the song.

The band on that song is the Chili Peppers.

yeah i did know that, the guitar sounds like it would be definitly chili peppers style. i heard they did the backing after he died.

Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah
Smashing Pumpkins - Landslide

yeah, I'm not saying that the original was bad..I just like listening to the pumpkins version more. Maybe cos I'm a 90's whore

but I will defend my Buckley choice to the death. Cohen is one of the best artists of all time..and he's canadian! But, his Hallelujah isn't all that great. I love that Jeff saw so much potential in it

Jeff Buckley's 'Hallelujah' definitely. I don't even like Buckley's music very much, but that's a magnificent reading of what are some of the greatest lyrics ever put to paper. I love John Cale's version as well.

My mind keeps blanking out for any others although I'm sure there are more. The Hendrix I definitely agree with, though.

U2 - Helter Skelter

I really think so. Not to slag off the Beatles or anything.

speaking of johnny cash - i'll take his version of 'personal jesus' any day!

Quiet Riot's version of 'cum on feel the noize' is probably the definitive version of that song, but i agree with mrbrau1 that the slade (original) version rules.

I agree. The Beatles' recording of it is neat, but I prefer how U2's sounds.

Of course, the Beatles were the master of the cover, but in particular, Twist And Shout sticks out in my mind.
