Let me just say ... I'm glad you didn't mention 'Astronomy' !!

I guess you finally realize BOC's version should NOT be touched !!

Oh yeah, can't believe I forgot that one! Metallica's Astronomy is tighter and sounds a lot cooler than BOC's clunky version! :p

I'll tell you what... one thing is clear. Metallica (and by that I mean the good Metallica pre St. Crapper) is criminally underrated in this forum!

:hmm: How did I know you were gonna say that ?? :tsk:

 Let's not start this disagreement all over again ... regarding BOC's original VS. Metallica's cover.

Otherwise, I may have to "revive" that 'Floydian' thread ... just so we can AGREE on something !!

Johnny Cash - Hurt
Jimi Hendrix - All Along the Watchtower
Aretha Franklin - Respect
Ike and Tina Turner - Proud Mary
U2 - Satellite of Love
Bruce Springsteen - War

i reckon that the byrds recorded what would become the definitive version of 'mr tambourine man', though dylan wrote and recorded it first.
mr mcguinn and company teased a pop gem out of a somewhat lengthy and rambling folk tune.
depending on my mood, i'll take the manic street preachers version of 'raindrops keep falling on my head' over the original (bj thomas).
speaking of the manics...
they did an absolutely savage and heartbreaking version of 'suicide is painless' (theme from m.a.s.h.)
i've no idea who did the original, but this one is better.

all along the watchtower by jimi hendrix is the definitive answer

even dylan plays the hendrix version because he knows it's better

The definitive answer is...

The Kingsmen version of 'Louie, Louie. (1963)

A song so often covered radio stations hold Louie, Louie marathons. The original was by Richard Berry & The Pharoahs but the Kingsmen is most remembered.

Honorable mentions to the vivisection Judas Priest give Joan Baez's 'Diamonds and Rust.'

Aerosmith - The Train Kept A Rollin'
Foo Fighters w/ Brian May - Have A Cigar
Queen - The Great Pretender
They Might Be Giants - Istanbul (Not Constantinople)
Eric Clapton - Layla [because for whatever reason I can't stand the Derek and the Dominoes version; this still assumes someone can "cover" their own work in a different incarnation]

I'll try to think of some more.

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Higher Ground
The Black Crowes - Hard To Handle
Eric Clapton - Cocaine
Johnny Cash - The Mercy Seat [anything re: Nick Cave is hit&miss for a lot of people, but I like this cover]
Johnny Cash - Hurt
Marilyn Manson - Sweet Dreams
Creedence Clearwater Revival - Heard it Through the Grapevine

That's all I've got for the moment.

The Beach Boys - Sloop John B (though I'm not sure whether reworked standards also cound as covers)
Frank Zappa - WPLJ, Valerie (and many more)

The Clash - I Fought The Law

The Byrds - Mr.Tambourine Man

U2 - Paint It Black

U2 - Fortunate Son

Happy Mondays - Step On

The Bangles - Hazey Shade Of Winter

The Flying Lizards - (Money) That's What I Want

The Beatles - Twist & Shout

Soft Cell - Tainted Love

Bow Wow Wow - I Want Candy

Souixsie & The Banshees - Dear Prudence

Millie Small - My Boy Lollipop

Sinead O'Connor - Nothing Compares 2 U

The Beatles - Rock And Roll Music

Blondie - The Tide Is High

:yikes:  :yuck:
Those are two of U2's worst covers (certainly Paint It Black) and don't even come near the originals.

Millie Small - My Boy Lollipop

That's a cover? :hmm:
I thought it was an original...
Oh well. It is a great fun song.

U2 - All Along The Watchtower
Joe Cocker - With A Little Help From My Friends
U2 - Knockin On Heaven's Door
R.E.M. - Does Your Mother Know

Nilsson's version of Badfinger's 'Without You', but this is contentious.

no, it's not contentious. you're right.
badfinger at that time said that nilsson recorded the version they wish they could have done.
cool tidbit...
badfinger were in the studio recording their next album when they heard a dude in another room recording their song...it was nilsson. they were pumped...

But I LIKE Badfinger's version, because I can sing along to it but Nilsson is so damn difficult to sing along to screw that they say, it's all about what I say.

Next, Mariah Carey.
