Normal computer help...do i have a virus?

or have i been hacked????

when i go to my dial up networking, there is a connection called "OOBE Registration" it is set to dial an 800 phone number (888).

also when i check my mail with outlook express a security popup window comes up that asks me for my login name and password. i NEVER have my email set to require a password. when i close the window (after several clicks) it finally goes away and i'm able to read and receive my emails without typing in a password.

yesterday when i tried connecting to the internet with the 'my connection' shortcut i normally use, it would try to connect, then disconnect. i had to use a different connection profile.

i better not have been hacked.

if your antivirus is up to date, do a virus scan. if it doesnt detect anything, then call your internet provider. they might be able to help.

What Icelle said, Also try Ad-Aware and Spybot to look for crap.

You can do online virusscans here and here.

The OOBE (Out of Box Experience) registration thing is probably fine. OOBE is what runs after you install Windows and it would need to go online to activate/register your copy of Windows.

You might have a porn dialer. Who knows.

Spybot will detect that.

I clean up my computer about once a week with Spybot and No-Adware. They are great programs, among others.

Some advice: Run your windows in "safe mode" when running these programs and deleting potentially dangerous files and folders.
