As many of you probably know already, Coldplay have selected the worst song from X&Y as its fourth and, in all likelihood, final single.

I've heard a lot of rumors concerning the single itself. It could stay in typical Coldplay fashion (for the X&Y record singles) and have two b-sides, one entirely new song and one reworked song that was only performed live on the Rush Of Blood tour. I've also heard that it's going to be a mini live EP instead. I've also heard it's going to be a radio only release, much like Original Of The Species, and therefore not going to offer any b-sides at all.

What's for certain, though, is the video was released today. If you thought the Talk video was strange, you haven't seen anything yet. I'm uploading it to youtube.com right now so when that is finished I'll post the link in here.

what were they thinking:rant:
personally I think they should have used either "what if" or "white shadows" as the next single:mad:

How about "Swallowed In the Sea"? It's the right length, and it doesn't suck.

I was hoping for White Shadows as well, despite the "When Doves Cry" chorus.

That also crossed my mind, too. I think that would be an extremely successful single. They've played it twice of the three times I've seen them on the Twisted Logic Tour and it's also a terrific live song.

But I still believe they could have dodged a lot of criticism by releasing Low as the first single from X&Y. I really love that song and it's a rare bit of something different. I'd say Low and Til Kingdom Come are my favorite tracks from X&Y, with Square One tagging right behind. I don't care for the album as much as AROBTTH or Parachutes, of course, but I think that it has a few really great songs on it. It just lacks the consistency of the previous two albums. On the past two, there wasn't a "What If" or "Hardest Part" to kill the rest of the album. I think those songs really bog down the record.

Drop "What If". Drop "The Hardest Part" and probably "Twisted Logic." Leave "Swallowed in the Sea" to close the album by putting Til Kingdom Come somewhere else in the running order. Change the track order around and you definitely have a better album (and by album, I'm saying collection of songs that feels like one experience). X&Y just feels like a bunch of songs thrown together, to me. That's its biggest problem. That and overproduction.

Look at the b-sides from this album. There have been some great songs, especially from the Talk single (Gravity and instant favorite of mine: Sleeping Sun). Coldplay has always left some great material off albums, such as I Ran Away off of Rush Of Blood or Careful Where You Stand from Parachutes. If some of these non-album cuts made it onto the record instead of some of the less spectacular tracks, the albums would improve that much more. Not to say AROBTTH or Parachutes need much, if any, improvement.

But honestly, there's no denying a song like 'How You See The World' deserves to be on a record more than 'The Hardest Part'. HYSTW is definitely one of my favorite songs from the X&Y sessions and I was absolutely thrilled to hear it live for the first time last month. I was also the only person in my section, if not the entire arena, singing along to it. It's too bad most of the casual fans don't get to hear a quality track such as that.

I'm rambling now, here's the damn video already:

Thanks for posting it IMP.

I like it.

I've always found the best way to enjoy Coldplay, is as a giant pisstake.

Whenever they stray too sentimental or too heavy in their music they normally tend to offset it with some obscure or half noticed (or in this case totally obvious) mockery in the song title, music video or in interviews etc. I dig it. When they don't do it though I can find them a tad heavy (S.O.S anyone). But this film clip is great. Not as good as Talk, but good.

Really looking foward to seeing them in June.

Bouncy piano line check
Preschool lyrics check
Unnecessary falsetto check

HAY IT MUST BE A COLDBLEH SONG!

And as for the video, wow. The combination of checker patterns, Chris Martin, white shoes, and thongs will make sure I won't be able to have an erection for at least the next five, or six minutes even.

What the fuck.

Really.

What the fuck was up with that video? Are they really fucking seri0s? Seriously? HJLKHKUJUIGEWR!!!!!!!!1

EDIT: I mean, really. I was expecting the moon robot from the last retarded video to come out of the water and start humping Johnny Buckland. That's how bad this video is.

Don't try to rationalize it.
It's fucking horrible.
The worst.

My god, what have they done?

Well I'm sure they weren't. I mean the whole Miami Vice look, 82 year-old dancing woman, local talk show thing.... tounge firmly planted in cheek.

You know how in middle school you'd think of Margaret Thatcher naked or something so you wouldn't pop one on your date during the slow dances? That's what this video is. It's an FDA-approved anti-boner device. Years from now, I'm going to forget most of the details and conflate them all into an 86-year-old Chris Martin in a checkerboard man-thong. Holy shit, that's bad, even as a joke.

I love THE HARDEST PART

best X&Y song for me with Swallowed in the sea and Fix You

I have yet to see the video

The vast majority haven't. Which is why I uploaded it to youtube at the link above.

Meh, the song isn't great. I like it better than others on X&Y but it's nowhere as good as White Shadows.
White Shadows is the best song on the album, hands down.

Watching the video now...:eyebrow:

White shadows is jawsome. I think Coldplay should just scrap the rock thing and become a dance pop quartet.

Hell, it could even suit them better. One thing about hearing some of those songs in an arena for the first time last month was I noticed that some of the songs on the album, notably Talk, seem to be written for no other purpose but to pound an arena.

This mentality is another thing that killed X&Y and explains why the original Talk was so much better than it's arena-rock doppleganger. It feels much more organic and much more like a song Coldplay would write. Not that I think expanding your horizons is a bad thing, because you need to do it to remain relevant. Maybe cutting down on the (over-)production would yield better results. Just let the songs see where they want to go without all the bells and whistles.

I'm ambivalent about it. It's somewhat funny, and maybe even a great commentary on the American pop culture/value system. But like most things Coldplay, it just seems too forced. And the guitar is so terribly derivative of early U2 and Echo & The Bunnymen(*channels disturbing ghosts of threads past*).

I find it mighty interesting that they appear as a lounge act. Mighty.

I agree

10 months after buying the album, the only song I listen to is 'Talk'

that's pretty sad.

hehe, you're kidding right?

Fucking LOW all the way, man. All five minutes of it.

man, I thought the Talk video was bad. My brother came in and said 'Gareth, new coldplay video's on Channel 4 if you're interested...' so i went to telly and switched it on and saw that garbage. I thought it was a fucking JOKE or their song was being used in Eurotrash or something...complete crap. I don't care if it's "Irony" or "Great Commentary" it's still a shit video for a shit choice of song...!

Uh, no.

Daniel Lanois' classic classic coffee cup riff in Zoo Station really overshadows Coldplay's brand of poppy cutlery thwacking.

Is this a joke? It's one of Coldplay's poorest videos and the theme seems to have nothing to do with the song:eyebrow: ... weird. The song was a bad choice for a single.
In the place of this REM-look-a-like-song I think the album have much better tunes to turn a single... Oh yes it does. I wish Square One (my fav) or White Shadows could do that job. Or even Low, X&Y or What if, I like them too... :(

I really enjoy 'The Hardest Part', but I could only watch about half of that video. It was very disturbing.:|

I saw the video on TV last night. Only one smiley comes close to getting across what I thought of it - :slant:

I like the song though:up:

I actually really, really like X&Y and I also like The Hardest Part (didn't think much of it at first but it grew on me) but I don't think it's the most appropriate single choice off the album. I'd rather see Square One released personally.

I'd agree with that. There are some great songs on it (In fact, I'll put my head above the parapet and say most of the songs on it are great IMHO) but many of them just don't gel together as an album and some of the songs are just too similar (For example, A Message and Swallowed In The Sea always remind me of each other. I enjoy both songs but should they really be on the same release?)

Why do the people here in Battering Clang who HATE Coldplay the most LOVE to post on every Coldplay thread? Just curious.

If it helps, Chris Martin confessed that The Hardest Part in particular and X&Y in general are not un-related to his relationship with Porn.

it's a good song. i'd rather they release "A Message" or "Swallowed By The Sea" though.
