There's a brilliant review/Clash article in the current issue of the New Yorker discussing the reissue of London Calling. It talks about the band's history a bit, goes through the tracks on the album, and then finally calls "Guns of Brixton" the soul of the album. And then there's this:

"Threatening your rivals and writing scatological lyrics is one way to be 'controversial.' Staring down the riot police is another"

Those two sentences say so much. It's a good read, I don't have time to transcribe it, though.
