Can anyone tell me what the 3:16 in Steve Austin's name means?

I've always wanted to know. Especially lately as he's swinging between preacher dude and beer guzzling redneck

Hi Angela

It refers to the Bible, Book Of John, Chapter 3, Verse 16 :

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Don't you remember when the rainbow haired guy used to be at almost every televised NFL game with that sign?

Bannerman
(by Steve Taylor)

One man's grinning from behind the net
Waits 'til the camera's adjusted
Don't you worry 'bout the flak you'll get?
Aren't you scared of getting busted?

The ball gets booted
It hits the crossbeam
Up goes the banner
"JOHN 3:16"

He don't worry 'bout the critics
They tow the line
He don't worry 'bout the cynics
They live to whine
He ain't gonna change the world
But he knows who can
Bannerman

Prime time football in the Buffalo snow
Freezing his little epidermis
Lifts that banner at the first field goal
Drinks clam chowder from a thermos

He's never missed a game
He never spells it wrong
He never talks back when they tell him "Move Along"

He don't worry 'bout the critics
They'll howl for days
He don't worry 'bout the cynics
They navel-gaze
He ain't gonna change the world
But he knows who can
Bannerman

Sports fans everywhere dying for a drink
But they've gotta find the well first
One man's ready with a banner and a wink
A whole lotta souls are getting well-versed

Every time I see him
I smile a little more
I can't help praying for another high score

He don't worry 'bout the critics
They'll howl for days
He don't worry 'bout the cynics
They navel-gaze
He ain't gonna change the world
But he knows who can
Bannerman

He don't worry 'bout the critics
They've met their match
He don't worry 'bout the cynics
They sniff and scratch
He ain't gonna change the world
But he knows who can
Bannerman

What?...heh heh, couldn't resist.

It originated after a match with Jake "The Snake" Roberts. Roberts was doing a reformed-man-of-God gimmick, and Austin just destroyed him in a match. As Roberts was being helped back to the dressing room, Austin decided to taunt him.

"Lookatcha with your John 3:16. Well Austin 3:16 says I just whipped your ass!"

------------------
"You gotta love living, baby, 'cause dyin's a pain in the ass."-- Frank Sinatra

Adam: Look guys, I got a Springfield spoon for my spoon collection.
Edge: Oh boy, here we go...
Bono: Wow, how many is that now Adam?
Adam: Nine. If I didn't have my spoons, I'd go insane.
Bono: Can I see it?
*adam gives bono the spoon, bono throws it away*
Adam: My spoon!

Did anyone see him on "The weakest link?"
I'm not a normal watcher of the show, but I could not pass up seeing Stone Cold and the rest of the WWF superstars battling it out on the show. Bubba Dudley was kicking some a$$, but Kane wound up winning.

Heh heh, I remember that match. Felt sorry to see Jake in such poor shape. He looked even worse then when Earthquake sat on his python.

Fan sign at a WWF event:

"I've been drinking beer since 3:16"

Speaking of fan signs...remember back when this catchphrase was really popular, and everyone was putting 3:16 behind everything?

One fan's sign...
