The psychiatrist who hospitalized Britney Spears is a highly respected therapist known for her compassion, a former colleague tells PEOPLE.

"She's an excellent clinician and an excellent psychiatrist," says Harold Young, the clinical director at the Maple Counseling Center in Beverly Hills, where Spears's psychiatrist Dr. Deborah Nadel worked for about five years.

Board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, Nadel graduated from University of California Medical School in San Francisco 18 years ago, and she did her residency at UCLA, records show.

Nadel, who has recently started treating the troubled pop star, had instigated Spears's second hospitalization in January, this time at UCLA Medical Center's psychiatric ward, for a 72-hour evaluation, sources tell PEOPLE.

Spears chose Nadel from a list of doctors recommended by her lawyers, a source says.

Young, who worked with Nadel about 12 years ago at the center – a non-profit agency that provides low-cost counseling to people in need – said Nadel is now on the staff at UCLA and is "well thought of in the therapeutic community."

"I think [Britney] is in somebody's hands who will be caring, concerned, compassionate and respectful," says Young.

LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- A restraining order aimed at Britney Spears' friend and manager Sam Lutfi alleges that he drugged her, took over her life and finances and controlled the paparazzi who pursued her for months.

The order, based on a lengthy declaration from Spears' mother, Lynne, says that Spears met Lutfi in October 2007 and "Mr. Lutfi has essentially moved into Britney's home and has purported to take control of her life, home and finances."

The documents released by the court Tuesday ordered him to stay away from her and stop the harassment.

In a section of the order that detailed previous harassment, Lynne Spears said "Mr. Lutfi drugged Britney, he has cut Britney's home phone lines and removed her cell phone chargers. He yells at her. He claims to control everything -- Britney's business manager, her attorneys and the security guards at the gate."

i really don't know that her parents are any better, I mean look how she has turned out. Where do you think that came from? Two people who are so dysfunctional (they have no clue how to be real parents, IMO) and don't always have her intentions at heart. But this Lufti guy is clearly in there for the money and fame and not for her.. So she really is in a no win situation with people who are going to be a good support system (except maybe the hospital staff) and people who are going to tell her no, no one has for years..

Yeah but she is an adult now and can make her own decisions.

no she can't when she is so severely bipolar... Someone has to do it for her.. I would say she really doesn't have the ideal support when it comes to all this. Both her parents and Lufti have agendas and it doesn't involve brit's well being that's for sure.

Britney sidekick has history of restraining orders

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- He's been seen squiring around a dazed looking Britney Spears, at times acting as her spokesman, referring to himself as her manager and friend, and insisting all the while that her best interest is his only concern.

All the same, Sam Lutfi, the 33-year-old man in the baseball cap who's been behind the scenes throughout Britney's public downfall, has not been easy to define.

Then on Tuesday, accusations in a restraining order cutting him off from the troubled pop star would seem to support at least one theory: that he was a Svengali figure in her life, a shady hanger-on who controlled everything — from doling out her pills to holding the paparazzi's leash.

The day before the court documents were released, Lutfi told The Associated Press in a text message: "I have no problems with anyone writing anything negative against me. My image is not of concern, hers is." Lutfi did not immediately respond to further inquiry.

The restraining order, based on a statement from Spears' mother Lynne, was not the first against Lutfi, who is listed in legal documents as Osama Lutfi. Accusations in at least three prior orders range from obscene messages following a business deal to a neighbor who said he was hounded incessantly and threatened with bodily harm.

Spears remained hospitalized Monday for psychiatric evaluation after being committed last week. The order, which bars Lutfi from contacting her in any way, was granted the same day a court turned control of her affairs over to her father and a lawyer.

Though Lutfi had recently reached out to various magazines and media personalities with information on Spears' condition and state of mind, details on him have proved elusive.

Public records show he was born August 16, 1974 in Los Angeles. Music magazine Blender, in a March cover story on Spears, states that Lutfi grew up in Woodland Hills, where his mother reportedly owns several gas stations.

According to the movie database IMDb.com, Lutfi served as associate producer of 1998 film "Circles" (also known as "Crossing Paths") and 2001's "Crossing Cords." And a profile titled "Sam Lutfi" on the networking Web site LinkedIn lists him as an "Independent Media Production Professional" with education from the University of Southern California. The school's alumni Web site does not list Lutfi as a past student.

How Lutfi connected with Spears in the first place isn't clear.

Brandy Navarre, co-owner of celebrity photo agency and Web site X17, told the AP that Lutfi contacted the agency about nine or 10 months ago — after her head-shaving incident and others — about telling Spears' side of the story.

Since then, X17 photographers have cultivated a close relationship with both Spears and Lutfi, whom they have photographed together numerous times. Lutfi communicates with X17 by text messages, instant messages and e-mail regularly, and has had long conversations with Navarre, she said.

Navarre said she never asked him how he and Spears met. Still, "I think I've always had a positive feeling of him," Navarre said. "He seems to have Britney's best interest in mind."

In the order against Lutfi, Lynne Spears says her daughter met him in October 2007, and that he "essentially moved into Britney's home and has purported to take control of her life, home and finances." She describes witnessing a situation of tight control and manipulation, with Lutfi calling the shots on her medications, cutting her phone lines, and deciding who's let in to see the pop star.

A court commissioner on Monday extended temporary conservatorship of Spears to her father, from whom she's been estranged, through Feb 14. Adam Streisand, an attorney who said he believed he had been authorized to represent Spears, argued Monday that James Spears should be removed because his role "is causing her more agitation and more distress."

"Her family hasn't been around," Navarre said. "(Lutfi) has kind of been filling that void. ... He's done everything from being a default manager and publicist to being a brother, a dad."

Navarre denied rumors that the agency was paying Lutfi for access.

"We have paid people for information, for pictures, but we've never paid Sam Lutfi and have never paid Britney Spears," Navarre said. "And he's never asked us for any money."

Last month, Barbara Walters said on ABC's "The View" that Lutfi had contacted her, telling her Spears "is suffering from what he describes as mental issues which are treatable." She also said Lutfi "seems to be enormously supportive" of Spears.

Court documents from previous cohorts of Lutfi present a darker picture.

In October 2005, businesswoman Jumana Issa filed a complaint in Los Angeles against Lutfi; it was dismissed in March 2006 because she failed to appear for a preliminary hearing. When contacted by phone, Issa refused to comment.

In court papers, the Westside Escrow Corporation owner claimed Lutfi started harassing her from the day of closing an escrow account for him after he demanded canceling an escrow check which she said she was unable to stop payment on.

Issa said Lutfi antagonized her repeatedly with obscene e-mails, offensive faxes and late-night voice mails, hanging up on her around 15-20 times a day, according to court documents. Issa described the ordeal as "an overwhelming nightmare."

Lutfi allegedly wrote in one fax provided by Issa, "Come on big lady, I know you are capable of responding. Put down the donuts and call me."

In October 2004, a restraining order was issued demanding Lutfi stay at least 100 yards away from Mark Douglas Snoland, a neighbor in Lutfi's condominium building, for three years. Snoland's attorney Ronald Ziff referred questions to Snoland, who did not immediately return calls seeking comment.

According to Snoland's petition for a restraining order, Lutfi began "pounding" on Snoland's front door on the night of Sept. 6, 2004 and tried to kick the door in while also pounding on a kitchen window and "yelling verbal threats of bodily harm" against Snoland and his mother, who lived in the unit.

Snoland claimed Lutfi returned 15 minutes later to continue to kick the door and yell threats. Snoland also alleged Lutfi buzzed him on an intercom "non stop" and, hours later, called his home phone number and hung up every few minutes.

Lutfi claimed in a response to the petition that Snoland only "knocked" on the door, and that Snoland "was never threatened," but actually "angry he was removed from the board of the condo complex."

In April 2007, an Orange County Superior Court granted a restraining order against Lutfi for 29-year-old Danny Haines, who told Blender he had been a close friend of Lutfi for two years and that Lutfi once told him he should kill himself. Attempts by the AP to reach Haines for comment were unsuccessful.

According to Blender, Haines said he and Lutfi met on Myspace.com in 2005 when Haines was struggling with relationships with his relatives and friends. The two became tight pals, Haines told the magazine, and Lutfi emphasized that he could be a mediator between Haines and his family.

Haines claims Lutfi showed a jealous side, leaving voicemails calling Haines "worthless," and then divulging, "I love you, man. I love you to death." Haines alleges Lutfi later suggested Haines take sleeping pills, "lots of them," following a dispute over money Lutfi allegedly borrowed from Haines, according to the magazine.

Haines claims when he stopped communicating with Lutfi, Lutfi retaliated by e-mailing naked photographs of Haines to his family, friends, colleagues and employer, and text messaged and called repeatedly.

WTF? Will the craziness never end? Lufti is a lunatic! And whose brilliant idea was it to actually let the Brit Brit train hit the tracks again? Sit back, my friends, and enjoy the ride!

Apparently they let her out of the hospital, legally they couldn't prove danger to herself/others any longer. But the conservatorship is still in place.

She is still obviously bat-shit crazy. It's only a matter of time until she's a danger to herself and others again.

Oh I agree, but that's the way those 5150 things are set up. I don't see how it can turn around for her unless her parents can somehow get her in a long term facility of some kind for starters and get certain people out of her life for good. It's like a catch 22, she would probably have to do something so bad that by that time it would be too late.

Why Britney Spears Was Released Early | Britney Spears
Britney Spears was released early from UCLA Medical Center's psych ward because a court representative found "no just cause" for the hold, a source tells PEOPLE.

The doctor overseeing Spears's care had wanted her to stay, (as did her parents), but the decision was overridden by the court representative, the source said.

The source said that the doctor who was vetoed was not Spears's psychiatrist Dr. Deborah Nadel, but another attending doctor at UCLA. Once Nadel issued the singer's 72-hour hold at UCLA, Nadel was not involved in Spears's hospitalization, the source said.

The decision followed regular procedure for any patient on a 14-day hold.

The procedure calls for a hearing at the hospital to find out whether the hold is justified. The rep for the court, called a "hearing referee" – who is usually a lawyer – interviews the patient and doctor to determine if there's "just cause" for detainment.

"This is when law and medicine collide," says attorney Terry K. Wasserman, who's not involved in the Spears matter, "when a lawyer can override a doctor's opinion."

This is from TMZ.

The following statement was released to CNN's Anderson Cooper by Jamie and Lynne Spears, Britney's parents:

"As parents of an adult child in the throws (sic) of a mental health crisis, we were extremely disappointed this morning to learn that over the recommendation of her treating psychiatrist, our daughter Britney was released from the hospital that could best care for her and keep her safe. We are deeply concerned about our daughter's safety and vulnerability and we believe her life is presently at risk. There are conservatorship orders in place created to protect our daughter that are being blatantly disregarded. We ask only that the court's orders be enforced so that a tragedy may be averted."

i sure hope not... Now seems that her father is making a valid attempt to get her better or better situation. I just hope the law works in his favor now for her sake..

She is still talking in that stupid accent! WTF is wrong with her?!! Seems like she is desperately trying to find legal counsel to help break the conservatorship.

Somebody is going to get hurt and hurt bad in the swarming paps following Britney's every move and that is going to be a very sad sad thing.

If everyone ignored her maybe she'd grow up and stop the madness!

The latest Rolling Stones issue is all about Britney's breakdown. It claims her father was a drug addict, and that her management controlled every aspect of her life, including her relationship with Justin Timberlake.

I honestly don't want to see an RS issue about any tragedy happening to Britney. I really hope she - somehow - comes out of this. But she appears to be surrounded by the wrong people.

Isn't it obvious from most of the posts about her? She has a mental illness. What her parents need to do is take her back to Louisiana and get her the hell away from where she is right now. That Sam Lufti guy is a creep and her "bf" Adnan needs to go away.

Good news in that article! As for all the bad press Britney's parents are getting in regards to the Rolling Stone article and others, I think it's very unfair. I think the media are desperate to pin the blame for their pop princess' behavior on someone. This wasn't supposed to happen to the beautiful, talented star they built her up to be. There was never any evidence or report about the supposed terrible parenting of Jamie and Lynn Spears until the past year. When Britney was at the height of her fame they never seemed like the pushy stage parents or people trying to ride on her fame and money. They weren't out partying with her like Dina Lohan does, nor do I recall hearing about her partying hard during her late teens when she was so successful. Her dad has his own catering business in LA now and doesn't take any money from her. I've never heard of her mother doing so either. Lynn Spears was a teacher until Britney was about 18 or 19, and then she started touring with Britney. I'm sure they made their mistakes like all parents do, but they've always seemed to have their children's best needs at heart. Raising a daughter who's the biggest pop star in the world is probably very different than raising a daughter who's a normal college student. Britney's mental illness is just that, an illness. It's no different than a physical problem. It's not the fault of her parents or Britney; it is a result of a chemical and psychological disorder the latter of which was likely caused by the extreme fame and pressure Britney has been under since she was 17.

Thanks for the article. I hope when Britney's father does fire that bastard of a manager, the manager will actually stay away!

Her "manager" right now is Sam Lutfi, I believe. They already have a restraining order against him that was granted after Lynn filed papers talking about all the crazy things he's done to Britney. He is basically hiding out to avoid being served the papers, so techincally he could still see Britney and not get in trouble by claiming he doesn't have the order yet.:|
