best song of all time

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
:banghead: can't think of any... I like to listen music of all kinds, all the time, ... that's why i have a 60something CD jukebox... I cannot tire a song out by playing it over and over and over... yaknowhaddayemean?

Can't choose 1...so 1 of these...

Where The Streets Have No Name - U2
Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen
Karma Police - Radiohead
Message In A Bottle - The Police
You Learn - Alanis Morissette
Losing My Religion - REM
In My Place - Coldplay
Silent All These Years - Tori Amos

yo red ships-
I downloaded it. great version of airbag live.

personally, if it's rh, I go with fake plastic trees live from mtv unplugged.

outside of u2 and rh, I go with kashmir from zep.

predictably, beautiful girl - inxs
also worth mentioning 'to sir with love' - lulu. the movie possibly helps this choice.
sympathy for the devil played live when mick is in full swagger and swing. include paint it black with this. 2 of the best songs they ever did, and live is beyond words.
speaking of live, freaks is one of my all time favs.

i best be stopping now. bear wanted one only.

airbag is close, it made my wedding cd btw....

I'd say
Bob Dylan- Subterrianean Homesick Blues
Elvis Costello- Alison
The Cure- Boys dont cry
The Smiths- Sheila take a bow

many more, those come to mind first though

yes, ive heard about three different versions of it live. its not bad. they havent played since the beginning of the ok computer tour though. why?
I was just curious if they'd ever played it live, as it's a cool song and I was surprised to not see it on any setlist.

BTW, I downloaded 'Airbag' live. Nice guitar work near the end. It's like it's crawling backwards up the song which had just played itself out in real time. Very impressive.

PS. Today the best song of all time is:

Joan of Arc by Leonard Cohen

I downloaded and listened to your recommendation my Murderous Bear of a friend. It was indeed quite a good version of that song.

That concert recording is pretty high quality, I may have to check out some of the other songs.

"In My Life" the Beatles (can't believe no one has mentioned this one)

I'll also drink to "Into the Mystic"...damn, that song gets me every time.

And if it's a U2 song, it's certainly "One."

Great song..

I honestly don't know what my favorite Beatles song is...one of them is definitely "Penny Lane"...I have a soft spot for that one.

My favorite U2 song is "Angel Of Harlem". :).

"One" is great, too, though.

Some other great songs I can think of:

Layla-Derek and the Dominoes
Brown-Eyed Girl-Van Morrison
My Girl-Temptations
Imagine-John Lennon

Aww, I love that song.

there are many best songs out there

this is one of them

I'm all lost in the supermarket
I can no longer shop happily
I came in here for that special offer
A guaranteed personality

I wasn't born so much as I fell out
Nobody seemed to notice me
We had a hedge back home in the suburbs
Over which I never could see

I heard the people who lived on the ceiling
Scream and fight most scarily
Hearing that noise was my first ever feeling
That's how it's been all around me

I'm all lost in the supermarket
I can no longer shop happily
I came in here for that special offer
A guaranteed personality

I'm all tuned in, I see all the programmes
I save coupons from packets of tea
I've got my giant hit discoteque album
I empty a bottle and I feel a bit free

The kids in the halls and the pipes in the walls
Make me noises for company
Long distance callers make long distance calls
And the silence makes me lonely

I'm all lost in the supermarket
I can no longer shop happily
I came in here for that special offer
A guaranteed personality

And it's not here
It disappear
I'm all lost

there are places I'll remember all my life
though some have changed
some forever, not for better
some have gone, and some remain
all these places have their moments
but lovers and friends I still can recall
some are dead and some are living
in my life I've loved them all

but of all these friends and lovers
there is no one compares with you
and these memories lose their meaning
when I think of love as something new
though I know I'll never lose affection
for people and things that went before
I know I'll often stop and think about them
in my life, I love you more

though I know I'll never lose affection

I know I'll often stop and think about them
in my life, I love you more

John certainly knew how to write them, didn't he? Such a gift for the literal without slipping down the perilous slopes of the abstract (ie, "loved", "affection")...he was still able to hone in a sense of wonder despite the broadness of ideas. Something Bono managed to pull off in 'One'.

They don't call him one of the greatest songwriters of all time for nothing. :).

I love those lyrics for "In My Life". It's such a nice song.
