There is a special place in hell now for me, just for thinking of this image, let alone making it:

"I've been waiting for a guy to come and take me by the hand"

- Disorder - Joy Division

The line is actually, "I've been waiting for a GUIDE to come and take me by the hand," which is what makes the line so fucking powerful. But you win, either way. I'm frankly shocked that y'all kept going on after this was posted, although I've gotta say...there've been a few great "nominations" posted up in here. Good job, for the most part.

Mr. Curtis takes the cake all the way, though. Especially when you factor in the delivery.

Now that your picture's in the paper being rhythmically admired...

(OK, so it might not be best opening line EVER. But it's definitely number one for best opening line of a first song on a debut album.)

"You're dangerous, 'cos you're honest."
--Author unknown

"And you know it's time to go through the sleet and driving snow
across the fields of mourning light in the distance."
--Mr. Plow

"We turn away to face the cold, enduring chill as the day begs the night for mercy love."
--Some guy on a bus

"I know I've got nothing to say, someone has taken my place."
-- Fleetwood Mac (LB) "Second Hand News"

"Every night that goes between, I feel a little less."
-- Fleetwood Mac (SN) "Storms"

"She broke down and let me in, made me see where I've been."
--Fleetwood Mac (LB) "Never Going Back"

"When the wind blows and the rain feels cold with a head full of snow, with a head full of snow."
--Rolling Stones (MJ/KR) "Moonlight Mile

"Did you ever wake up to find a day that broke up your mind,
destroyed your notion of circular time."
--Rolling Stones (MJ/KR) "Sway"

"You're the kind of person you meet at certain dismal dull affairs."
--Rolling Stones (MJ/KR) "19th Nervous Breakdown"

I'd keep going but I think you can see a pattern here....

we both know it was a girl back in Bethlehem

Maybe I didn’t like to hear
But I still can’t believe Speed Racer is dead
So then I thought I’d make some plans
But Fire thought she’d really rather be Water instead

you know you shook me, you shook me all night long!

led zeppelin-you shook me

That's not an LZ song, it's an AC/DC song. That's part of the chorus, the opening line goes something like this:

"She was a fast machine, she kept her motor clean, she was the best damn woman I had ever seen..."

Great song!

Led Zeppellin has some great opening lines:

"If the sun refused to shine, I would still be loving you. When mountains crumble to the sea, there will still be you and me."
-- "Thank You"

"As I walk down the highway all I do is sing this song and a train that's passin' my way helps the rhythm move along."
-- "Out on the Tiles"

"Greasy slicked down body, groovy leather trim, I like the way you hold the road, mama, it ain't no sin."
-- "Trampled Underfoot"

Jesus Built My Hotrod - Ministry

Can't see nothin' in front of me,
Can't see nothin' comin' up behind,
Make my way through this darkness,
I can't feel nothing but this chain that grinds.

Lost track of how far I've gone,
Far I've gone, how high I've climbed,
On my back's a sixty pound stone,
On my shoulder half mile of line.

Bruce Springsteen, "The Rising"

The smile of dawn arrived early May
She carried a gift from her home
The night shed a tear to tell her of fear
And of sorrow and pain she'll never outgrow
Death is the first dance eternal

- Metropolis Part I: The Miracle And The Sleeper, Dream Theater

This song leaks out onto the pavement
It could be a joke, it could be a statement
The more that I fake it and pretend I don't care
The more you can read into what isn't there

Pearl Jam - Love Boat Captain
"Is this just another day, this God forgotten place...?
First comes love and then comes pain... let the games begin
Questions rise and answers fall... insurmountable
Love Boat Captain take the reigns and steer us towards the clear... here
It's already been sung but it can't be said enough
All you need is love..."
