This is the OFFICIAL thread for the best releases of 2003. The only stipulation is that albums picked have to have been released (in the U.S.) this calendar year. Imports from last year and subsequently saw a US release this year count as well. So no Coldplay picks, ok?

Post your top 10 here. Point systems will be 10 for 1st, 9 for 2nd, etc etc. After the end of the year, we'll tabulate the winner(s). Dec. 31st is the deadline.

Any questions before we start?

i'd like to add audioslave and johnny cash in there as well, but even though they were big albums in '03, they were technicaly released in november of '02... so i'm gonna pass on #s 9 and 10, unless you're willing to let me include these two... at which case i'd need to redo my list to work 'em in. if ya really want me to think of 2 more albums released in '03 i will, but i must say... i completely understand the grammys when doing this list... crappy year for music IMO

I also agree. I think the only studio album (excluding compilations) I bought that was released in 2003 was Emmylou Harris with Stumble Into Grace. And the July 11th Mansfield concert of Pearl Jam is brilliant too (love the acoustic pre-set!).

C ya!

Marty

I don't have 10 because I've been a bit of a slacker with the new music this year, but here goes my top 3...

3. Elvis Costello "North"
2. Daniel Lanois "Shine"
1. Madonna "American Life"

  • Ed Harcourt -- From Every Sphere
  • Idlewild -- The Remote Part
  • Tom McRae -- Just Like Blood
  • The Delgados -- Hate
  • Jesse Malin -- The Fine Art of Self-Destruction
  • Mojave 3 -- Spoon and Rafter
  • South -- With the Tides
  • Super Furry Animals -- Phantom Power
  • Gemma Hayes -- Night On My Side
  • The Polyphonic Spree -- The Beginning Stages of....
    [/list=a]

Some of my choices would be different if it weren't for the US rule, but for conformity's sake, I complied with it.

This is hard.
Ok, I'll try to work with the rules...I think all of mine are correct. I fought SO hard not to do honourable mentions...trying to stick to the rules. Even though there were some that some people mentioned that were on my list and I had to delete *coughafewonmeganscough* :shifty:

In order from worst (well, NOT worst clearly, but....) to BEST:

The Delgados - Hate
Chemical Brothers - singles '93-'03
Radiohead - HTTT
Spiritualized - Amazing Grace
Tom McRae - Just like blood
Damien Rice - O
Mojave 3 - Spoon and Rafter
South - With the Tides
Ed Harcourt - From Every Sphere
Idlewild - The Remote Part

*edited to delete the numbers because rankings and numbers in general scare me....and I got confused on the ordering.

I too believe it was a fab year for music.

1) The Clash - The Essential Clash
2) Blur - Think Tank
3) Damien Rice - 0
4) Joe Strummer & The Mescaleros - Streetcore
5) Belle & Sebastian - Dear Catstrophe Waitress
6) Dropkick Murphys - Blackout
7) Manic Street Preachers - Lipstick Traces
8) REM - In Time: The Best Of 1988-2003
9) The Darkness - Permission To Land
10) Radiohead - Hail To The Thief

discounting compilations, then, my favourite album for 2003 is Think Tank by Blur.

yeah somehow i don't know about best ofs...i put the clash best of on my list, but i'm kind of not sure about that. it didn't come in at #1 cos it lacks death or glory :p

i'd put the tossers--purgatory on my list at #9 if the clash best of is left off.

1.Opeth-Damnation
2.Katatonia-Viva Emptiness
3.Dave Gahan-Paper Monsters
4.Porcupine Tree-In Absentia
5.Darkseed-Astral Adventures
6.H.I.M.-Love Metal
7.Old Man's Child-In Defiance Of Existence
8.Rapture-Songs of the Withering
9.Third Eye Blind-Out of the Vein
10.Blur-Think Tank (It was a grower  )

No tough choices really

I haven't got that many 2003 releases, but some are:

Martina Topley-Bird - Quixotic
Goldfrapp - Black Cherry
The White Stripes - Elephant
Daniel Lanois - Shine
Peaches - Father******
Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Fever to Tell
Sleepy Jackson - Lovers
Sevara Nazarkhan - Yol Bolsin

The Best Ofs:

Suede
REM
Pulp

I didn't realize that O was released in 2003 in the US, so I'd like to scratch Gemma Hayes from my list and put in Damien Rice, please.

eek Gemma Hayes

I forgot all about her because I bought her album last year

although if you're going by US versions I don't quite agree with 'Over & Over' and 'Night On My Side' being lopped off unceremoniously
