Ok, here we go.

We've got 16 playlists vying for the top spot. Later today, all players will receive links via PM and will have two weeks to listen. By October 26th, I will need a ranking from each participant.

You'll rank 15 playlists total - you will not include your own. Points will be added up using the following formula:

1. 15 points
2. 14 points
3. 13 points

I trust you know the rest.

Once I receive all rankings, I will add up the totals and start the results thread on the 26th (if I get them all relatively early) or the 27th.

With that, here are the contending playlists listed in alphabetical order by player name.

THIS OLD CABIN: A Selection From The 2000s

Let me be upfront: this is not my Best Of 2000s list. While the 80 minute restriction may have helped others condense their favourites into a very focused selection of personal awesomeness, it was a curse for me. Many of my favourite songs from the 2000s are quite long. However, no list representing just six or seven bands adequately reflected the depth of music I have loved from this decade. Meanwhile, any list of shorter songs contained stuff that I think is great, but not truly in the decade's top 20. I tried to strike a balance but it didn't really feel satisfying. So here's the list I found least objectionable, a list that I think has some reasonable diversity and functions cohesively, a list that I feel does at least a decent job of representing at least some of what I've loved about the 2000s, unashamedly my favourite decade of music. The closer, Verses, is unquestionably my favourite song of the decade. I hope you enjoy, and give some more out-there picks a fair chance. You'll know what I mean.

As for the picture, it's one I took in Malbun, Liechtenstein in July 2009. Not only do I think it has a nice atmosphere complementing some of the songs in my list, but I think it nicely illustrates the foggy nature of doing a Best Of such as this, especially when you have musical inclinations such as mine.

2. Tinariwen - "Matadjem Yinmixan" - Aman Iman: Water Is Life, 2007 (5:45)
3. Porcupine Tree - "The Rest Will Flow" - Lightbulb Sun, 2000 [2008 remaster] (3:18)
4. God Is An Astronaut - "Suicide By Star" - All Is Violent, All Is Bright, 2005 (4:38)
5. Jesu - "The Stars That Hang Above You" - Envy/Jesu split EP, 2008 (7:36)
6. Pure Reason Revolution - "Deus Ex Machina" - Amor Vincit Omnia, 2009 (5:41)
7. Melechesh - "Leper Jerusalem" - Emissaries, 2006 (3:49)

Turn The Page

Going into this list I knew one thing, there was a side of the 2000s I wanted to cover, and I knew it wasn't going to be the insanely popular side. This decade has been important to me for a lot of reasons. For the most part, it is the decade I grew up in, but, it seems like with the first days of the year 2000, I finally became aware of the fact that I didn't simply have to listen to the music my parents listened to, thus, I went to the one place I knew I could find music 24 hours a day...at least then: MTV. Yes, I was a TRL addict, every day, I couldn't miss a show, and that was how, in October of that year, I witnessed a band from Ireland I had never heard of playing on the rooftop of a building in Times Square. I watched the performance, it was kinda cool. Hated the song though. And yet, after it was over, all I kept hearing day in and day out was about how U2 were BACK. Back? Back from where? I've never even heard of these guys. With each play of the “Beautiful Day” video, I grew more and more tired of these guys, and so, I did the only logical thing...I went to find out what else they sang. I mean, if everyone kept going on about them, there must be SOMETHING worthwhile. Well, to make a long story short, eventually I fell in love with U2, and am where I am today. “Walk On” was not the first U2 song I fell in love with, but I remember, vividly, a day when I was sitting in my room with the remote to the VCR firmly in hand, watching the video again and again and again...just to transcribe the lyrics to the song (I had the Internet, but apparently I didn't know what it's #1 use was, at the #2 use, seeings how Porn exists and all). But this list is not just about U2. It's about the music of the 2000s, the good and the simple guilty pleasures. I could go on and on telling you a story about each and every one of these songs; Singing “Mr. Brightside” at the top of my lungs in my first car, Having a deep philosophical conversation with my friends about the story behind “Stan” (at the oh so ripe age of 13...in fact I just found out that the song is fictitious while I was writing this. The things you'll believe for the rest of your life after you hear it once), Taking my boyfriend to his first Drive-In theater experience while “I Gotta Feeling” played for the 30th time that week. They're all special, they all symbolize the most important years of my life, and, while you may not like the songs, I hope you can understand what my purpose here was. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I realize for most of you this was tl;dr.

1.Black Eyed Peas - “I Gotta Feeling (Radio Edit)” - I Gotta Feeling (4:07)

MODERN GIRLS

I'm pretty proud of this playlist. I think it's probably the most poptastic playlist in DI history. And, unless Screwtape has done it before, I think it's the first DI entry to feature only female vocalists. I've also represented each year of the decade here. I hope it's a fun listen for you guys. Somethin' a little different. No matter what, I know Axver will love it.

As I'm sure was the case with many of you, creating a compilation of my favorite songs of the 2000s held a special significance. The majority of those entering the competition are either in their teens or early/mid twenties, which means that this particular decade probably enlightened them to the underground music scene at large, or perhaps even the mainstream. While creating a compilation from a decade you weren't born in certainly has value, as truly great music is timeless and moves each of us regardless of when we were born, creating a list of songs released during the time in which your tastes matured is an intriguing challenge. There are a thousand ways to attack it, but I elected to simply pick the songs that have been significant to me over the past 5 years or so, as I didn't start listening to more current music until around 2004. So yeah, the track listing is slightly imbalanced; only 7 of these 19 songs were released before then. However, I feel this playlist is an excellent representation of my tastes, and what I consider the most notable songs of the decade. And for all the Mr. Braus out there, yes, I know this is the whitest collection of music imaginable. I made that cover just for you.

Track listing:

1. TV On The Radio - "I Was A Lover" - Return To Cookie Mountain (4:20)
2. Arcade Fire - "Keep The Car Running" - Neon Bible (3:28)

4. Radiohead - "Weird Fishes/Arpeggi" - In Rainbows (5:17)
5. Wilco - "Pot Kettle Black" - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot (4:00)
6. The National - "Fake Empire" - Boxer (3:24)
7. Sufjan Stevens - "Chicago" - Come On! Feel The Illinoise! (6:05)
8. Beck - "Lost Cause" - Sea Change (3:47)
9. The Shins - "Kissing The Lipless" - Chutes Too Narrow
10. Flight Of The Conchords - "The Most Beautiful Girl (In The Room)" - Flight Of The Conchords (4:00)

Withering Aughts

I had 24 hours notice to do this and about 4-5 actual hours to do it, but I'm pretty happy with it. Basically, it starts off with a bang, with the first 9 tracks being more rock-oriented, and then it gets a lot more mellow - that was just the flow I ended up being happy with. It's pretty mainstream, but whatever. These are just the tracks that I couldn't bare to cut - all that I can't leave behind, so to speak. A couple notes: 1. Sean Lennon's track is probably the only one you guys haven't heard a lot before; if I have one hope for this list, it's that Sean's track persuades you guys to give his album Friendly Fire a try. 2. I think Jane's Addiction's Just Because is one of the more underrated rock songs of the decade. I could comment on all of my picks, but you don't want to read, you want to listen. I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed making it.

1. Coldplay - "Politik" - A Rush Of Blood To The Head - 2002 - (5:19)
2. Arcade Fire - "Wake Up" - Funeral - 2004 - (5:35)
3. Muse - "Stockholm Syndrome" - Absolution - 2003 - (4:57)
4. Jane's Addiction - "Just Because" - Strays - 2003 - (3:52)
5. Green Day - "Boulevard Of Broken Dreams" - American Idiot - 2004 - (4:21)
6. Smashing Pumpkins - "Stand Inside Your Love" - Machina - 2000 - (4:14)
7. The Killers - "Mr. Brightside" - Hot Fuss - 2004 - (3:44)
8. The Flaming Lips - "Are You A Hypnotist?" - Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots - 2002 - (4:45)
9. Travis - "Love Will Come Through" - 12 Memories - 2003 - (3:42)
10. Sean Lennon - "Wait For Me" - Friendly Fire - 2006 - (2:39)
11. Weezer - "Island In The Sun" - Weezer(The Green Album) - 2001 - (3:26)

Tommy Wiseau’s The Neighbors

di_tommyw.jpg

Concept:

"The Neighbors" is a sitcom consisting of relationship between a group of neighbors who live in an apartment building. The lead character is Charlie, the manager of the building. The tenants are a diverse group of personality of different ages and backgrounds constantly bringing their problems to Charlie and his secretary girlfiend Bebe. The character of Princess Penelope create commotion by seeing the ghost of her uncle Prince Charles. It is a fresh humorous look at human behavioe with different view points including plenty of surprises. The demographic is all inclusive.

The spelling mistakes in the concept are supposed to be that way; I took the album cover and concept from Tommy Wiseau's website.

Pi –The Best of The 2000’s

“Bookends of ice and snow; the end of the story is a return to the start. We are lost by year’s end, tried and hoping for another. In a kingdom of white, the hope and dream of a new start is crystallized. This cycle of solid to shattered and mended to melted has rarely been as evident as in this decade. So, how does one measure a circular life?”

Often I hear and read that music today is terrible. In the mainstream they’d probably be right. If you know how to find it though this has been a decade rich in great songs, albums and artists. In fact, for the 80 minutes allowed it has been far too rich. I realized quickly that this playlist couldn’t feature my picks for best songs of the decade (most of which are over five minutes and closer to eight) or a fair representation of the decade’s diversity. I struggled more on this playlist than any other. In the end, I just decided to not over think it anymore and just come up with a unified piece. While not every deserving album, artist and song are here, I do think this playlist is a great answer to those that think music is terrible today.

I added the years next to each song. Looking at the playlist it is clear that recent albums, for better or worse, seemed to have an advantage over the rest of the decade. I’m curious if this was the case for anyone else. The biggest examples are “We Are The People” and “Rabbit Heart” (which people might remember from the radio interview before U2’s Sheffield broadcast) which both snuck in thanks to being recent musical discoveries. A year from now the playlist might have looked very different.

1. Todd Rundgren- “God Said” –Liars (7:35) [2004]
2. Empire of The Sun- “We Are The People”-Walking On A Dream (4:27) [2008]

5. Florence & The Machine- “Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up)” –Lungs (3:52) [2009]
6. Metric- “Poster of A Girl” –Live It Out (4:49) [2005]
7. Moby- “Shot In The Back of The Head” –Wait For Me (3:16) [2009]
8. Morrissey- “Life Is A Pigsty” –Ringleader of the Tormentors (7:23) [2006]

Awesome. Can't wait to get the links and then start listening. Looks like lots of Flaming Lips made the lists, which is always nice for me to see.

One Blood and I chose the same Lips song. :cute:

And I was seriously the only person to include Bjork!?

I have half a mind to carpet bomb this whole forum.

Yay! You also included a Dirty Projectors song, which is fantastic.

Just when I thought Impster had the best cover... goddamn.

I'm psyched for almost all of these, too. Fantastic.

You do it one more fucking time and I ain't posting on this forum if you're still here. I'm fucking serious. You're a nice guy. You're a nice guy, but that don't fucking cut it when you're fucking around like this on the forum.

Ohhhhh, goooood for you. And how was it? I hope it was fucking good, because it's useless now, isn't it?

awesome. can't wait to listen to these. based purely on songs i know, irishteen's looks like it'll be one of my favourites. but i'm actually looking forward to hearing axver's the most

I tried to download bono_212's but it said the folder had no files.

I'm just gonna do these in alphabetical order, so Axver's will be first

I also just got Steven Wilson's solo work and both of Blackfield's albums  i'll make these lists my priority though, to make sure I get through them all in 2 weeks. on Tuesdays and Sundays I spend hours doing homework, so those will be good times to knock a lot of these out

huh. After downloading it in full, my computer decided that GAF's list could not be saved. weird.

Well, I have LM's and Axver's so far, so I'll probably start with those

I'll post the rankings and reasoning once I've listened to all the playlists. In the meantime I'll post thoughts on each playlist. They will all follow the same basic format. The first playlist I listened to was AtomicBono's.

AtomicBono

1. Norma Jean - "A Small Spark Vs. A Great Forest" - Redeemer - 2006- (4:59)
